I'm doing a new build with a 5800x3d and the asus b550-f gaming wifi II mobo.
Do I need to flash the bios before I install the processor, which is kind of a pain in the ass, or can I just build the pc and then flash the bios, and install the drivers?
I know it might be a dumb question, but I don't wanna make a very expensive mistake. Thanks in advance.

You can test it and see if it POSTs. If not, you can use BIOS Flashback with the CPU and everything installed. There might be a sticker on the mobo with a SKU that has the last 4 digits indicating which BIOS version is installed. You need at least version 2423 for the CPU.

Yes it's doable. Product page claims this: " Users can place a BIOS file onto a FAT32-formatted USB drive and simply plug it into the USB BIOS FlashBack™ port and press a button to update the (UEFI) BIOS. Updates can be made even if memory or CPU aren't present " Remember that the USB drive has to be FAT32. Then download the BIOS from ASUS, Extract the Archive. There now should be two files. One is an EXE named BIOSRenamer. Run that EXE. The .CAP file should now be renamed. Copy that file into your FAT32 formatted USB Flashdrive. Make sure you are in the root of that drive! Make sure your B550 I-Gaming is powered but not trying to start. Put the Flashdrive into the FlashBack USB Port (take that one out of the manual) and hold the FlashBack button for 3 seconds. It should blink/flash up now - wait until there are no more lights (Depends on BIOS Size but can take up to 10 minutes). Should have a flashed BIOS now. More on reddit.com

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aBiTr6tpcs this video explains it. you need a usb drive (not bigger than 16gb to avoid incompatibility issues) with FAT32 format, download and save in it the BIOS file from asus web. then insert it in the usb port thats mark for bios flbk (important), then press the flbk button and wait for the led light to go off or, you can enter the BIOS interface by pressing F2 or Delete key when mobo logo is on screen. then press F7 to show advanced settings and go to the "tool" section where you can find the EZ flash utility. for this you need the usb drive with the BIOS file in it connected to any usb port. the utility will show the drives connected to your mobo, you need to locate yourusb drive and then read the '.cad' file to update the BIOS sorry if engrish, im chilean More on reddit.com

I purchased the B550-I in preparation for Zen 3. It looks like I have bios 0805 according to the sticker so I need to update but I don't currently own an AMD cpu.
I plugged in the 24 pin and 8 pin PSU cables, tried to run the bios flashback on a USB 2.0 without a cpu but I'm not seeing any lights or indication the motherboard even has power. I thought the point of flashback was that you could update the bios without components? Is this doable?

Hi! I'm also in the same situation, with a Strix B550-I board that behaves exactly as you described. There is this note in the manual that mentions how a cpu must be installed to enable the functionality, something that seems to be a bit of a weird quirk of this board. This contradicts this image on the product's website that explicitly says that no cpu is needed, as is generally the case.

All the ASUS articles I found say to use EZUpdate or MyASUS, which this board does not have any associated downloads for. What do I do to update?

Updated a bios on this board from a 2021-2023 bios with no issues.
Now,
Any other bios update I try with the same flash drive and motherboard results in the bios stating that it’s not a bios file even though it worked before with no issues.
I tried clearing cmos and replacing the battery with no luck.
Any other words of advice before I leave the bios as is because the board is almost 6 years old at this point and can be replaced.

did you make sure it is the B550-F GAMING you have ? or maybe u have the B550-F GAMING WIFI II etc i have seen ppl think they have one ver of a mb say the b550 f but they really have the wifi II ver so double check also you do not need a usb drive can put the unziped renamed bios file on the root of main c drive and can update in bios from there

I'm planning the same build. There is a bios flashback button on the mobo. When its all together, before you turn it on BUT its plugged into and has power, you insert a usb onto the back of the mobo (it will show which slot) then hit the bios flashback button.
