What are some defining characteristics of Romantic era music?
Romantic music can most succinctly be characterized as an exploration of extremes. Tempo fluctuation, dynamics, instrument range, orchestral size, instrumental variety, and harmonic complexity. It was a growth from and rebuke of the constraints of the Classical period, which was itself a rebuke of the excesses of the Baroque. More on reddit.com

Absolute Music: something everyone should know
I think that along with absolute music, composers should realize that non-absolute music doesn't have to be about expressing the emotional state of the composer or even about the composer communicating an emotional state. Program music can be about something without emotional expression or communication ever being intended by the composer. The third movement of Satie's masterpiece, Socrate, is the death of Socrates. But Satie chose the driest translation he could find and did not attempt to do anything musically to express the inherent drama of the situation (he also wrote it for a single female voice to do all the parts (all the parts being male characters)). The music is just there. It is amazing music but does not try to emotionally manipulate the listener in spite of the subject matter. Part of the scourge of the Romantic myth of composition is that everything has to be emotionally overwrought in order to be music or at least good music. We composers don't need to buy into that lie. Programmatic music—where instrumental music tells a story—was popular from Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique (a symphonic poem) all the way to twentieth-century composers like the German master Richard Strauss, whose Symphonia Domestica is a hallmark of programmatic music. Influence on opera: Opera, with its innate emotional heft, became an obvious match for the Romantic period.

An Introduction to Early Romantic Music – a Playlist
August 17, 2021 - There are so many to choose from that I have split this period into two separate playlists, the Early Romantic and the Late Romantic/Impressionist periods. This first post covers Early Romantic composers. I have sought out music that I think would be most appealing to children, but with such a busy period inevitably there will be loads of music and composers I have left out.

The most common type of Mass to be written during the Romantic period was the Requiem Mass, also known as the Mass for the Dead. Many composers of time provided at least one Requiem Mass as part of their catalogue of works. In connection to the political changes happening during the period, many composers took part in political movements and wrote pieces to celebrate their country or national identity. Such pieces are a part of the movement known as Nationalism. One musical example of Nationalism is Bedřich Smetana’s cycle of six symphonic poems titled Má Vlast (or, My Homeland).

1 month ago - The possibilities for dramatic expressiveness in music were augmented both by the expansion and perfection of the instrumental repertoire and by the creation of new musical forms, such as the lied, nocturne, intermezzo, capriccio, prelude, and mazurka. The Romantic spirit often found inspiration in poetic texts, legends, and folk tales, and the linking of words and music either programmatically or through such forms as the concert overture and incidental music is another distinguishing feature of Romantic music.

Such lists, however, proliferated over time, resulting in a “chaos of antithetical phenomena,” criticized for their superficiality and for signifying so many different things that there came to be no central meaning. The attributes have also been criticized for being too vague. For example, features of the “ghostly and supernatural” could apply equally to Mozart’s Don Giovanni from 1787 and Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress from 1951.

On the other hand, composers who lived near the beginning of the romantic period were very confused indeed! Or rather, we are very confused about them today because we don’t know where they belong. One example is Franz Schubert (1797–1828). And it’s all Ludwig van Beethoven’s (1770–1827) fault! He started it off. Beethoven wrote the first romantic music.

Around 1820, musical Romanticism took its non-establishment impetus from Beethoven's experimental late works, Rossini's colorful Italian operas, and Schubert's daring harmonies. Over the next 80 years, almost every aspect of Western art music underwent tremendous expansion—especially through the innovations of the German theatrical composer, Richard Wagner.
