r/Woodcarving on Reddit: Which bits should I get to start carving with a Dremel?
October 11, 2024 -
Edit: had to type this quick before going to work so I was kinda vague. I want to start sculpture carving on a small scale before moving up to bigger stuff. Looking for necessary Dremel bits to get off the ground before expanding.

Beginning set of power carving bits - Woodcarving Illustrated
I am new to woodcarving and have no experience, unless whittling a couple of wooden stakes to a point to lay out where to dig counts. I am going the power carving route because my hand grip is reduced and I need the tool to do the heavy work. I plan on starting to teach myself to relief carve ... I used a dremel to cut/sand the wood samller. What tool or dremel bits do I need to make the thing and edge smoother?
Sandpaper on a flat surface might be your best friend here. It’s so small I’m not sure I’d recommend any power tools and as I think you’ve seen here, any dremel bit doesn’t allow for the control and consistency you need. For the flat section - I’d consider placing sandpaper on a flat surface, position the rim you’re sanding maybe a half inch past the edge of the sandpaper (the rough rim on the sandpaper and the opposite end resting on the table-top), and then run a small section of the circumference of the piece in one direction (probably pulling towards yourself) while rotating your hand a bit (in whatever direction feels against the grain of your pull, I can’t quite describe it perfectly). Then rotate the piece in your hand a little bit and repeat the same motions. The hand movement while you’re pulling is important, without it you’ll sand a flat in the spot and that’ll be a problem. Repeat this, rotating all the way around and continue with whatever grits you like. Goal is to make it look as uniform as possible with the flat table-top acting as a flat reference. For putting a bevel on the bottom, I’d recommend the same process, but place a scrap piece of wood or something next to the sandpaper so the opposite end is elevated. This should result in dragging the piece at a bit of an angle relative to the sandpaper. At this point you can round over by hand with a soft sanding block. Take your time and this should result in a smoother and more precise finish. More on reddit.com

December 21, 2018 - I've been wanting to embellish some of my handles with carving. I even took a couple of classes and got a set of carving chisels. One thing I've found is that it's very difficult to carve hardwoods like Maple, African Blackwood, etc., so I've been thinking about using the rotary tool for that. To...

Hive-mind: Favorite 1/8 shank abrasive rotary/dental burs, stones & polishing wheels [AKA Dremel bits] | The Hobby-Machinist
February 14, 2024 - My auto/fab and woodworking interests have been better suited to 1/4" shank air-tools. On the rare occasions I did break out the 1/8" shank rotary grinder I never found the level of precision I'd hoped for. I found it too big to hold like a pencil, yet too awkward for fine work with the palm grip. The kits are full of tiny little bits ...

July 29, 2024 - - or can you direct me to bits that are essentially the same thing? And will they fit a Dremel or is this for a larger tool? thanks, Mark ... I call it a burr. Shank size runs from 1/8" to fit Dremel tools to 1/2". Most common is 1/4" to fit in air driven rotary tools. They are available in different shapes and lengths. I use them for metalworking, but I guess they will work for woodworking too.

June 14, 2023 - I use them myself, kaizen sell those as Sabretooth bits. as Maros indicates, the fine grades are pretty pointless. my goto bits are the ball and the rotosaw, you should try n get the rotosaw View attachment 493869 · Click to expand... Oh and would you go with the 1/8" or 1/4" shank? (the Rotozip apparently can apparently take both). Obviously the 1/4" have larger cutting ends. Would 1/8" with the smaller bud, and 1/4" in the large ball, make sense? ... I have the small ball, works fine for med to large trees.
