Tracked or Signed for? (UK)
So, within the UK, it breaks down like this: Regular first class or second class - no tracking, no signature on delivery, comes with £20 compensation Signed For, first or second class - signature on delivery, no tracking, comes with £50 compensation Special Delivery - tracking, signature on delivery, comes with £500 compensation with can be raised to £2500 for the item plus up to £10000 in consequential losses. So which of those you want to use depends on what you're sending. If it's valued at £20 or less and you don't mind having to send a refund or replacement when someone claims (either honestly or dishonestly) that they never got it, then you can get by with regular first or second class. If it's valued above £20, you may want to consider Signed For, as you'll have proof of delivery to protect you from scammers and up to £50 compensation for genuine cases of loss or damage. If it's valued over £50, particularly if there's a high risk of the item being damaged in transit (if you're selling glass or ceramics, for example), then you'll want to give Special Delivery serious consideration. It's a matter of balancing up how much extra you'll spend on shipping (unless you pass on the higher shipping costs to customers) vs how much you'll spend in refunds, replacements, and hassle. If you're selling large numbers of low value items, then the cost of sending a refund or replacement, no questions asked, may be lower than the cost of using Signed For/Special Delivery. If you're selling low numbers of high value items, then spending a couple extra quid on Signed For/Special Delivery may be much cheaper than the cost of issuing a refund or replacement. Like, for example, I sell nothing below £50, so I send everything by Signed For, except for packages over £100 which I send by Special Delivery. Technically if one of my £75 items was lost or damaged, I'd only be able to get £50 compensation on a £75 item, but it's such a rare occurrence with Royal Mail that paying the extra to send everything by Special Delivery costs more than losing £25 once every 3 years or so. But my items are valued high enough that the cost of Signed For is justified, because it's less than what I'd pay if 10% of my customers decided no proof of delivery means they can scam me, especially since I'd lose £55 in compensation (only getting £20 compensation on a £75 item would suck, wouldn't it?) on every single one. Internationally, you've got four options: International Standard - no tracking, comes with £20 compensation with cannot be increased International Tracked - tracking, comes with £50 compensation, can be raised to £250 for an extra £2.50 fee. International Tracked & Signed - tracking, signature on delivery, £50 compensation that can be raised to £250 for £2.50 International Signed - signature on delivery, no tracking, £50 compensation that can be raised to £250 for £2.50 Unless your items are low value and you don't mind sending refunds or replacements when something gets delayed (delivery time in excess of 6 weeks), it's highly recommended to ship with either International Tracked or International Tracked & Signed, not only for the higher compensation, but the presence of tracking dramatically reduces the number of customers getting worried about slow international shipping. International Tracked & Signed is usually considered the safest option due to the signature on delivery, but one thing to keep in mind is a lot of countries aren't used to having to sign for packages regularly like we are in the UK (or were pre-Covid, anyway!). I've personally found America in particular to be a problem when it comes to this, because packages are usually shipped to customers' homes rather than workplaces, so there's no one there to sign for them, which results in about 10% of Tracked & Signed packages being sent back to me. Tracked rather than Tracked & Signed is therefore more reliable for customers in the US - and conveniently, it's also significantly cheaper when sending to the US! Some countries just don't offer International Tracked & Signed - Australia and Canada will make you choose between International Tracked and International Signed, and of those two, Tracked is better than Signed because you've got evidence of the package's entire journey instead of just the delivery. But International Tracked & Signed works great for the vast majority of the EU, for example. Also take note of the extra £2.50 you can pay to increase the compensation for lost and damage packages. As with standard vs Signed For/Special Delivery, it's a matter of weighing up the value of your items vs the cost for the extra compensation. I've found paying the extra £2.50 on packages over £100 to be the most cost effective use of the extra compensation, taking the risk of occasionally losing some money on a lost item that's worth a little more than £50. But even internationally, loss and damage is exceptionally rare on tracked packages. I expect it's also rare on untracked ones, but you can't actually prove it, so you have to treat them as lost even when they're not. Note on signatures on delivery: no postal services are actually making anyone sign for anything right now, so the postal workers themselves are doing the signatures at the time they deliver the package. Even in the absence of the customer's signature, the postal worker's signature serves as proof of delivery, which is what you need to protect yourself. So... yeah... those are your options. You can only really answer for your own shop whether the costs of higher postage are worth the extra protection you get. But suffice to say, it's not as simple as the cheapest option always being the best. If your items are worth more money and/or at a higher risk of being damaged and/or at a higher risk of fraudulent "not received" claims, then getting tracking and/or a signature on delivery can be worth the extra cost. Experiences with Royal Mail International Tracked & Signed Heavier. Concerned about a package. | UK Business Forums
August 18, 2023 - The only hint that it's actually been accepted into the system is the Norway Post site showing some consignment details (no tracking updates), whereas an invalid number wouldn't show anything. I'm trying to be patient since I know it's the weekend but the customer is very concerned and wants answers so I'm trying to give them something. Click to expand... Mine was picked up at 12pm yesterday and showed up on EMS at 9pm. I do live very close to the new East Midlands Mail Centre though which is where it was scanned into the EMS system.

Answer (1 of 2): If the package has a tracking barcode on it then it will get scanned in the US. Whether that info gets transported to the Royal Mail is sketchy. You should be able to view it on usps.com
