The Prolific chipset devices tend to change COM ports when they feel like it and have a somewhat negative reputation largely caused by low-quality counterfit devices. I've been using one of these IOGear units for years. Someday when it dies, or if I need to move to USB-C, I'll probably upgrade to the Keyspan (which is available in a USB-C version). Embedded engineer here: The best supported in terms of drivers is stuff from FTDI are their FT2232HL/FT232(H)/etc. chips. You pay premium and will get premium. All serial stuff from WCH (CH340, etc.) has problems with reverse engineered driver binary blobs and sometimes struggles with bugs. They AFAIR do not publish open source drivers - or only the headers to their binaries. More on reddit.com

If you are putting together a crash bag I'm sure you'll already need to have a couple of db9 to rj45 cisco style console adapter cables. Probably also a couple of Micro-USB to USBA/C cables as well for switches that use that for console and maybe even a couple of db9 gender changers and null/crossover adapters. With all that stuff you might as well just add a USB-Serial cable rather then trying to find a laptop with a serial port and then being stuck if something happens to the laptop. I picked up a bunch of Keyspan/Tripp Lite USA-19HS back in the day and they've been working great. I've found that it's easy to find a USB to Serial cable that works at 9600 but most of the cheap ones break down if you try to connect at 115200. One important thing to include in your kit is a USB stick with drivers on it for whatever USB to Serial cable you settle on. More on reddit.com
