It’s certainly not perfect but I’ve never been asked to log in to it so I like it more than most other apps. I use it to buy my tickets and that’s it. I use google maps for better info regarding transfers and ETA’s and whatnot. Answer from DeadPotSociety on reddit.com

RTD MyRide App - App Store
Get it together, RTD. It’s late 2022. Riding a scooter is a far more technologically advanced experience than catching public transportation in a major metropolitan area of 3 million people. Be better. ... Wow. This app is so poorly designed and half baked – Denver should be ashamed of itself. Apple Pay doesn’t work in this app.

Not if you use the RTD MyRide app. App users can load cash by scanning the Pay With Cash barcode. Customers who do not use the app and need to load cash on a MyRide card will need the new VanillaDirect MyRide card. ... Yes. Current MyRide cards will continue to work the same as they do today.

r/Denver on Reddit: Why does Denvers RTD app suck so much?
May 18, 2023 -

I live in Denver with a car so have the RTD app installed but dont use it a lot. I have visited a few cities in different states and usually rely on their public transportation to get around.

I usually download the public transportation app to make travel easier. They have real time maps and live locations that are as convent and simple as the Lyft or Uber apps. Denvers seems overly complicated and almost more of a pain to use than is worth it. You can see live locations and schedules but not a simple map and click where you want to go.

Even compared to smaller cities I have been, RTD app just seems not as good.

There's no option to see what zones you need, so you're purchasing tickets blind, meaning you might not even be charged fairly. No maps on the app either. You can't add or change payment methods through the map. Am I the only one who finds the RTD app nearly useless? Half the time I try to use it I get a message stating “no itineraries found” or “an error occurred.” I’m looking at fairly routine routes like the Skip. There are some fabulous public transportation apps out there. Some tell you exactly when the next bus will arrive at your stop. One in Amsterdam shows exactly where to walk for transfers. It would be great to hear what’s keeping Boulder from having something that worked. Or is this user error?

r/Denver on Reddit: Best app for tracking RTD bus & train times?
May 30, 2023 -

When I lived in Boulder I used Transit and it worked great... the app tracked buses' live location, told me where/when to go, and gave alerts when approaching my stop. In 3 years I never once missed a bus or a stop.

But since I moved to Denver it seems to be wildly inaccurate, giving me wrong routes and timetables and not knowing where the next bus is. I'm trying Google Maps, which seems to be more accurate with locations and departures, but its alerts are horrible... I've missed my stop 2 out of 3 rides so far.

The RTD app doesn't seem to support the live tracking feature, but I'll try their Next Ride web app for a bit. What other transit apps do you recommend? Thanks!

Denver Transit: RTD Bus TImes App - App Store
Download now and get real-time maps, schedules, and live updates for buses, light rail, and commuter trains across the Denver metro area. Privacy Policy: travelwhiz.app/privacy Terms of Use: travelwhiz.app/terms more ... I love RTD as a whole. The system, the thought behind (most) of it, the way it’s been implemented and handled over time. The amount of accidents and crashes, fatalities and injuries are FAR below many other major US rail networks, LR or CR included in that mix. The app needs some work though, still; implement arrival times for the trains based off of Google Maps and Apple Maps APIs if you don’t have live train tracking — however, if you DO, please do consider activating the app to see where and when the trains are as well; I notice the train schedule still guesses, where Google Maps almost ALWAYS knows when the train is going to arrive.

I know the RTD MyRide app is new and goes live tomorrow (9/1) but has anyone figured out how to use it yet? Specifically for the local bus routes - do I just scan the barcode on the app using the new readers on the bus, and assuming I have funds in my RTD account it will deduct the fare? Or do I need to prepay for a ticket before I get on and scan the ticket using the app/ ticket reader? I’m hoping it’s the former but the instructions I’ve read so far don’t seem particularly clear. There’s instructions for how to buy tickets ahead of riding - which makes sense for rail I think due to the varying fares when crossing fare zones - but I’m hoping you can just hold your phone/barcode up to the reader on the buses and not have to faff around prepaying for a ticket before each ride.

r/Denver on Reddit: Easiest way to use public transit in Denver
February 4, 2024 -

I'm staying in Denver for a couple of nights and looking to get around the city using the bus/light rail system. In doing some research, it seems like the RTD app is one way to be able to pay for fares to use public transit.

Is that the easiest option? Do I need the app or can I simply tap to pay as needed with my CC or smartphone?

Note, I'm coming from NYC so I'm used to navigating with public transit and prefer it. But I just tap to pay as I go, which is super easy, and wondering if there's a similar option in Denver.

Moved here from NYC and you’re going to be floored by our public transportation and ask how we let it get this bad. That being said, if you accept that it’s a shotty system and build in extra time for the stupidity it will get ya where you need to be. My experience is that the app is the best way to pay for tickets. If you are depending solely on public transportation, then I would suggest buying a day pass for each day you’re here for all zones. There are no turnstiles or staff or anything checking tickets at stops but occasionally the RTD police will walk through checking tickets. This is a rumor, I have heard tale from many that this happens but I have never seen it myself. Do not use any app, sign, time table, schedule, or any other hints or suggestions about when to head to the station or bus stop. The RTD app lies and works off of time tables for next bus/train and google maps just lists the same. Further, if you’re at a station there will be no announcement over the speakers or on the “next arrival” sign if a line has closed or is running on a delay. Just go to the stop/station and accept that you have rolled the dice and that your fate is no longer in your hands. Edit: it is NOT a 24 hr system! If you go out at night you will probably have to Uber home.

No, RTD doesn't have tap to pay AFAIK. Your options for ticketing are (that I know of): Install the RTD MyRide app. Link w/ your credit/debit card. Buy and save tickets in virtual ticket wallet depending on your needs (3-hour pass or 3 day pass etc) and fare zones (local/regional/airport). Activate ticket from wallet before riding. Swipe QR code at bus fare boxes or light rail station scanning terminals before each ride. Buy paper tickets from automated kiosks at light rail stations (though sometimes these could be out of commission). Show to bus driver or during conductor checks on light/commuter rail (rarely happens on light rail). Buy paper ticket books from designated locations on RTD website. IMO, Google Maps works best for checking routes/schedules, and make sure you plan your trip ahead before heading out (don't assume that the service quality/coverage will be like NYC/East Coast). Even then, RTD can be quite unreliable at times, so make sure you have contingency plans incase you get stranded. And always try to ride the 1st rail car of trains. Good luck.
