Cyrillic keyboard with the Russian layout vs a layout where the letters are placed on their closest latin alphabet equivalents
I am a colemak user, so I wasn't really in your situation since both, the official Russian layout and the "phonetics" Russian layout would have been as fremd to me. So, I decided to learn the official Russian layout (by learning, I really mean learning since my keyboard, an ergodox EZ, has only blank keys. It tooks a couple of weeks to reach a decent typing speeds but I don't regret it since the "real" Russian layout is well designed. And since I don't need to read the signs on the keyboards, now any keyboard is a Russian keyboard (including the azerty keyboard of my chromebook. More on reddit.com

how i use the qwerty layout for russian language?
You have two options: "Russian Mnemonic" and "Russian Phonetic" layouts. Russian Mnemonic comes closer to English pronunciation: e.g. to write "ш" (the Russian equivalent of "sh") you'll have to press two keys: "s" and "h." Russian Phonetic doesn't do that and instead maps some Russian letters to other symbols: e.g. "[" is mapped to "ш." To get the Mnemonic layout: Go to Settings → Time & Language → Language & Region Press the "Add a language" button Search for "Russian" Add the standard Russian keyboard layout After it is installed press on the ••• button and select "Language options" Under "Keyboards" press "Add a keyboard" Select "Russian Mnemonic (ЯШЕРТЫ)" To het the Phonetic layout: It is not present in the Windows Settings, so you'll have to get it from an external source. Download and extract russian-phonetic.zip Run setup.exe Sign out or reboot the system More on reddit.com

r/russian on Reddit: How to write in Russian on an English keyboard
November 12, 2024 -

Hey guys,
probably I'm not the first one to have this kind of a problem. I am using a standard English QWERTY keyboard, but I started learning Russian recently and, as you may guess, it takes ages to write something down using system keyboards where you click on Cyrillic letters one by one... Really frustrating. Is there therefore a reliable way to use this English keyboard layout to write efficiently in Russian? What have you done to achieve so, if you achieved it?
