Considering taking on Russian as a 2nd language (From English)
here is my comment detailing out what gave me the most issue as a learner from English. The best tip I can give is pretty unsexy, but it’s to do whatever is going to keep you engaged with it on a daily basis. If you’re going to flame out after 2 weeks or 3 months because of the intensity, then doing the more serious intense thing isn’t actually helpful even if it feels more substantial. Have the thing that keeps you engaged with it every day, and supplement with the other stuff. Another very unsexy thing is you’re going to have to exhibit a very high degree of patience. This is not something you can master by tomorrow morning at 6 AM (I know you weren’t claiming that, but many people come into this with that tacit belief). I have just crossed 3 years into it and only in the last year did I feel like I began to get my sea legs with it, with things coming more intuitive to me and just being quicker of foot mentally. My last bit of advice is to go for more “comprehensible input” over strictly classroom stuff, because this language is so complex and nuanced that your subconscious limbic system is much better equipped to pick it up than your active conscious brain if that makes sense. It is much easier to “feel” Russian than it is to “know” it. A mix is certainly good, but majority textbook will leave you frustrated and confused IMO More on reddit.com

If you write an English word in Russian, do you automatically translate it into Russian or write it phonetically in Cyrillic letters?
It depends on the word. I think the term you're looking for is transliteration. Transliteration is writing a word phonetically, using a different alphabet. For example: iPhone - айфон boyfriend - бойфренд Rufus - Руфус Whether to translate or to transliterate depends on a lot of factors. Names are typically transliterated. In the case of айфон, I don't think there is another way to say it. There are other ways to say "boyfriend" in Russian (парень, молодой человек) but бойфренд is often used by the younger crowd.
