r/PcBuild on Reddit: Ryzen 8000 or intel 14th gen
July 20, 2023 -

Should I invest in the AM5 or intel platform for their upcoming 14th gen and ryzen 8000 series, I'm planning to buy my first motherboard soon and to build my first gaming pc but which platform should I choose for the next generation so I can be futureproof, P.S I'm completely skipping AM4 to AM5 or 12/13th gen mobos for the 14th gen cpus aka Z790/Z690 and to the A620/B650/X670 mobos for ryzen 8000, thanks and I hope to be in touch with all you guys down in the comments soon.

AMD Ryzen 8000 CPUs May Run as Hot as Intel's 14th Gen Processors | Hardware Times
October 28, 2023 - The Ryzen 8000 processors, leveraging the Zen 5 core architecture, are expected to be fabbed on the N4 “TSMC 4nm” node. The transistor density and power consumption are, therefore, expected to remain unchanged. However, the final PPT and heat production will depend on how far AMD decides to push the clocks. With Intel’s 14th Gen family being a factory overclock of 13th Gen, we can certainly expect it.

AMD Ryzen 8000-series CPUs built on Zen 5 might beat Intel's Arrow Lake to market | TechRadar
July 19, 2023 - The release notes also indicate that there is improved support for Intel's future processor generations: Meteor Lake (purported to be mobile-only), Arrow Lake (Desktop and mobile), and Lunar Lake. Lunar Lake is set for a late-2024/early-2025 release, and will introduce a whole new microarchitecture for Team Blue's chips. The upcoming 14th-gen Raptor Lake refresh and Meteor Lake chips – with both falling under the 14th-gen label and expected to land later this year (with the latter being reserved for mobile devices) – and Arrow Lake, expected in 2024, will be sticking with the hybrid performance-efficiency core design of Intel's current Raptor Lake chips.

r/buildapc on Reddit: Intel 14th gen or ryzen..?
December 27, 2024 -

Hi

I've been looking to upgrade my processor for a little while, which also means upgrading my motherboard so I can run ddr5 ram. Considering I'm switching mobo I thought that I would consider getting a ryzen cpu instead of going with intel, which I've always previously had.

If I'm upgrading to intel it will most likely be 14700kf considering it's about 330$ in sweden. I've heard intel had problems with 13-14th gen a couple of months back but ever since they said it was fixed I haven't heard any new problems occur. If I'd go with ryzen I don't really know what is on par with intel's 14th gen.

I need to be able to play cpu intensive games and I also do a lot of cpu heavy workload, mainly editing. I know that the 7800x3d and the 9800x3d are insane gaming processors, however, they lack at the workload tasks. The 7950x3d does both great, however, it's sitting at about 700+$ here in Sweden which is beyond my budget. That's basically the cost of mobo+i7+ram..

So I'm really just looking for advice if there are any ryzen processors that's on par with the 14th gen on gaming + workload tasks. And NOT overpriced like the x3d ones are today. From what I've seen not many ryzen cpus under 350-400 seem promising.

Some side notes: ik the 14th gen is on a dead platform. 15th gen didnt look promising so I'm not even going to consider upgrading that path any time soon. And also as I mentioned before I've heard the 14th gen had issues but since the fix like 3momths ago I haven't heard of anyone else having issues with it.

r/HomeServer on Reddit: Intel 13/14th gen vs. Ryzen 7000/8000 - idle power?
June 24, 2024 -

Hi all!

I'm building a home server for storage & occasional ML jobs. I live in Germany, so electricity costs are a pretty major concern (currently €0.40 per kWh). That makes me worry about idle power draw a fair bit. As an example - 100W of idling around cost me 350 bucks a year, cutting that down to 30 brings that down to a 105 - €245 p.A. saved.

Who's got a Z790 or X670 mobo & CPU and can share some idle power draw numbers?

For GPU, I'm definitely going with with 2x3090. Most stuff I'm using is CUDA only, so no choice here. They wind down pretty nicely though. My 4080 also idles around at 11W - with screens connected and whatsnot. Plus - I can always write some automation to shut them off completely when not in use.

My main concern is the CPU & mainboard platform. Historically speaking, Intel was much better at idle power draw and supporting C-states on Linux. Looking at the CPUs I've had in the past (1700X, 3600X, 5800X3D), none of them seemed to have proper C-states and idle power management - which is fine for desktop usage, but sucks for servers.

So my mind went to Z790 with a i5-13400/14400. But looking at the numerous issues Intel has been having recently (bending head spreaders, bad microcode), maybe an 8600G on a X670 chipset might be a viable alternative? Or maybe there's an affordable Xeon alternative that doesn't have a silly 100W idle?

i5-10400 - ~20W Ryzen5-7600X - ~25W For GPU, I'm definitely going with with 2x3090 well that would be interesting to see - without gpus and after... My 4080 also idles around at 11W - with screens connected and whatsnot. How do you measure that? If just hwinfo then it might not be that accurate For example that ryzen 7600X was 25W idle, but once rtx4060 went in, it idled with a single monitor connected at 45W So my mind went to Z790 with a i5-13400/14400. But looking at the numerous issues Intel has been having recently (bending head spreaders, bad microcode), maybe an 8600G on a X670 chipset might be a viable alternative? Would personally go for intel, maybe 12gen if wanting to save money and available. Feel like they are proven as good and 13th and 14th gen are just bumping up frequency and trying to get out of it as much as possible and adding efficiency cores that might complicate some things. Xeon alternative that doesn't have a silly 100W idle? Recently had Fujitsu TX1310 M5 with E-2356G go through my hands. It was at 14W idle. Went to 22W when it got pcie-2x-nvme card with 2x WD black 2TB ssds. But its just to say that modern xeons can go low power consumption if rest of the system wants to.

Idle power is tricky, as it can depend more on motherboard components than the cpu choice. Ideally I'd go for a separate home server / NAS and workstation. That way you can shut the workstation down when you aren't using it, and lets you do maintenance on your workstation more easily without bringing down all your services. Don't go for a G cpu, they're a trap. Worse cache and PCIe in exchange for a slightly better onboard iGPU, when you're already using a dedicated GPU. Also only trust power numbers from a the wall.

Intel vs. AMD: Which CPU should power your PC in 2025?
December 23, 2024 - More recently, AMD's Ryzen 5000 and Ryzen 7000 CPUs have consistently offered top-of-the-line performance for both gaming and workstation PCs. We've seen Intel respond to AMD's efforts in the form of better products of their own — especially the 12th-gen Alder Lake processors debuting Intel's hybrid architecture with P-cores and E-cores. Intel's reputation has taken a beating thanks to defective high-end 13th and 14th Gen CPUs coming to light.
