r/Bedding on Reddit: Any good? Saatva all-year down alternative comforter
January 27, 2024 -

I’m still searching for a fluffy down alternative comforter. My husband is allergic to down so unfortunately down is not an option. We had Nestwell down alternative comforters for our beach house and LOVE them but unfortunately Bed, Bath and Beyond no longer has them available and I am not interested in buying second hand or from a random person on eBay.

Has anyone have any experience with Saatva comforters? The picture is very enticing but the price is kinda high for down alternative. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Bedding recommendations?
I do not have personal experience with saatva, but this sub is pretty critical of the internet/instagram bedding vendors. The products aren’t awful, but they are generally not very good value for what they charge. At a quick glance it looks like their sateen sheet set is around $300- for that amount you can get a much, much nicer sheet set from one of the heritage linen companies like sferra or frette if you are willing to trawl ebay. The downside is the overstock vendors that sell those sets generally (though there are exceptions) do not allow returns for anything other then defective merchandise, so you need to know what you want in advance. If you decide to go this route i strongly recommend getting a bunch of fabric swatches first, so you know exactly which product lines you like the feel of. Most high-end companies will send them out for free More on reddit.com

Are expensive down comforters worth it?

That depends on what your standard for "worth it" is. Bedding, for me, goes into a category where frugality takes on a different aspect. I'm not just looking for the lowest price, I'm looking for the best that I can afford. It shows in my bedframe, my mattress, my comforter...

If you live in a colder climate, then it's absolutely worth it. I have a down alternative comforter because I live in the subtropics, but even though I'm rocking a $60 Amazon comforter in a $25 duvet, it's an unbelievably gully pleasure to cozy up under a fluffy blanket at the end of the day.

A quick search in r/BuyItForLife will show that the selection carried by LL Bean is well loved.

With down alternative duvets, is there much difference in what you get with certain brands/price ranges?
In terms of sleeping cooler while still maintaining fluffiness, it's a tough one. Down alternative (synthetic) is just not as breathable as natural fills. Opting for something with a cotton shell will help marginally, as cotton is more breathable than polyester. At some point, you may need to choose between fluffiness / weight and warmth and see which one you're willing to compromise on more. When shopping across brands, I would compare specs such as shell type, shell thread count (higher TC = softer), fill type (microfiber, polyester batting, or other?), fill weight, etc. You should be able to get something good quality within your budget, it's just about finding the specs that work best for your needs. Also worth checking if the brand offers a good return policy and/or warranty so you don't have to stress too much pre-purchase. In terms of natural down, it's a tough call. Down is a by-product of the meat industry, and you can find many companies that source their down ethically and post-mortem, with certifications against things like force-feeding, overcrowding, lack of vet care and other inhumane practices. But if you are opposed to eating meat and the meat industry period, these assurances may not go far enough for you, and that's ok. You're right to consider sustainability - not only is down a natural product, it should last you a lifetime (or longer) and can help reduce home heating costs in a cool climate. In terms of your concern about leakage, make sure that the company is using down-proof cotton and that they offer a warranty in case of any defects. There shouldn't be a lot of dust coming out, ever (given proper care instructions have been followed). Commercial down is only allowed to have a minimal amount of dust in it. It's impossible to remove every bit, but the threshold is quite low. Make sure to purchase from a reputable company that has processes in place to test their down regularly for cleanliness. What's the best way to wash a duvet insert?
The exact method for washing your duvet insert will vary depending on what it's made out of as well as the manufacturer's recommendations. The fill and shell materials will dictate how to appropriately care for your insert, as some are machine-washable while others require dry cleaning. Which size you choose is also a factor, since larger inserts may have too much volume for a home washing machine and will require a commercial washer.Using a duvet cover is one of the best ways to help preserve your insert's lifespan. Covers are usually made from washable fabrics that help decrease how often yo

How can you keep a duvet insert in place?
Duvet inserts typically use buttons, ties, loops, or snaps to help fasten the insert to the cover at all four corners. For example, a duvet insert with loops and a cover with buttons can easily be attached when you push the buttons through each corner loop. Since lots of sleepers mix and match their covers and inserts, many models are equipped to work with different fasteners. Some duvet covers lack internal ties to keep the insert in place. You can use small safety pins to secure the top corners of your duvet insert to the inside corners of your cover before putting on the cover. Matching the

Saatva uses 100% certified organic cotton in many of its products, and this comforter is no different. This gives the comforter a soft and smooth feel. In each of the corners, you’ll find loops which are there to attach a duvet cover to the comforter. Using a duvet cover adds both durability and color options. While this is listed as an all-season comforter, if you live in warmer climates, it might not be ideal for year-round use.
