I am male, 5'9, 165 lb. Back and side sleeper.
I tried the Luxury Firm for 180 days. I liked it but I wanted to try the Firm and so I am right now. I am on day 60+ but it's too firm. I think that if you have back problems, this is a great bed, but even though I do sleep on my back, I find myself turning from my back to my side often, and this bed is too stiff for side sleeping. And the breaking in process was 30 days of HELL for the Firm. The Luxury Firm breaking in process wasn't bad at all.
I clearly do not like this Firm mattress. I am ready to give it up. I would love to try the Plush Soft, but it will be another $100 for an exchange if I don't like it. I need to know how soft it it. RizKnows from YouTube said that he recommends the Soft Plush for combo sleepers or for people who are not sure which version to get (Luxury Firm for primary back/stomach sleepers and Firm for strict back/stomach sleepers). But for those who have tried Plush Soft and the Luxury Firm, how do they compared and contrast?
Hello. We got a Saatva Plush Soft a few weeks ago at a friend's recommendation. She loves it. She'd originally ordered the Luxury Firm but thought it was rock hard and swapped for the plush soft and loved it so much that we just ordered it based on her enthusiasm. It's a good mattress, but man is it soft. It feels too soft, too decadent, and I question the support it's giving my body. My butt sinks into it. I have a mild lower back ache. I'm 175 lbs and 5'9". And I'm just wondering if we should swap for the Luxury Firm and welcome any thoughts.

Okay, been a tad over 30 days - straight to the main question - YES, I still love the mattress! Now my review.
I am still wondering if the luxury firm would be better, but also now have concern if it could be too firm - that’s the question. As I said to me, it’s borderline too soft, but isn’t too soft (a reminder I’m 6’3” 240, very broad shoulders, strict side sleeper), if I was not a side sleeper it would be a tad too soft.
For the first week I had some aches, but that was more my body getting used to the new mattress, around the middle of week two is where it hit the stride. I used to wake up with neck, shoulder and hip pain. Now I wake up refreshed, occasionally I’ll have lower back pain, but I believe that’s more tied to activity than mattress.
Bottom line, this is a top tier quality mattress in my opinion. I’m still back and forth on whether I should exchange for luxury firm (but more than 50% keeping). Only reason is back of my head says in a year or so you can fix too firm with a topper, you can’t fix too soft (though at this price buying a new Saatva works as well, still money left over vs the big brand I almost got).
In any event, if you are not a strict side sleeper, get the luxury firm. I can say without a doubt I am happy I got the Saatva! BTW I went with the 11.5” Cal King, have a regular box spring, traditional bed and it is plenty high, if I got the 14 I’d not be happy as I would need a step stool (at 6’3”).
Hope this helps a fellow mattress shopper with analysis paralysis who has Saatva on their list.
I slept on the luxury firm for the first time last night.
It’s too firm for me. I’m going to sleep on it for another few days but then I’ll request the topper. Maybe i need to break it in, but I’m def use to softer mattresses. If after a few weeks it’s still hard, I’ll return for bear hybrid.
I’m in the same boat as you being 6’5” broad shoulders and strict side sleeper. I’m torn between Saatva luxury firm and the Brooklyn aurora. Think I’m going with Brooklyn, so I’ll post a review after a few weeks if I don’t return it for a saatva! Thanks for the post, helped confirm my choices
After loads of research, I settled on the Saatva, was going to go with the luxury firm 14.5” thankfully I used a tape measure to figure out the 11.5 would be better as the 14.5 would require a ladder. I’m 6’3” 240 side sleeper. I originally ordered the luxury firm as the “mixed use” but next day wished I had ordered the plush soft, as i really started to pay attention that I did spend 99% of my sleep time on my side. I called Saatva and no problem, they made the change to my order.
My old mattress was a Westin Heavenly bed I had about 15 years, was great for many years, but well beyond expiration. I would wake up with shoulder and hip pain, which was mostly due to the mattress age and springs digging in (i also started to think because perhaps I always got too firm a mattress for being a strict side sleeper as well). I’d typically toss and turn all night, get up two to three times to stretch and if I woke up after 4am would just get up as lying in bed was uncomfortable. For the first time, in a long time, my alarm clock woke me up this morning. My body was rested, my mind was rested and I had zero aches or pains.
I was worried about the plush soft being too soft and it’s not (as noted above i thought i always preferred a firmer mattress), I don’t feel like I sink, which was my biggest concern, it’s just a soft top with good support if that makes sense. I’ll know for sure in a couple weeks once my mattress breaks in fully, but again it’s not starting out really sinking soft, just comfy soft. I can tell you my shoulders appreciate it the most, I have very broad shoulders and would always feel the pressure as I slept, I just always thought it was a result of being a bigger guy with broad shoulders.
I ordered on 9/9 and it arrived yesterday 9/30, delivery was great and delivery guys said they don’t get many calls on returns, when they do it’s usually to change out for firmer or softer, not to return. I figure if I do end up changing for the luxury firm the $99 delivery fee (they charge that for returns or change outs) is kind of a trial / rental cost. Though at this point I don’t see any kind of exchange or return happening.
The quality of the mattress is on par with the heavenly bed (which I paid $4k for 15 years ago), I can sit on the side of the bed no problem and the materials are top notch.
If you want something more akin to a traditional mattress, then I suggest the Saatva. I almost spent over twice as much on an Aireloom, glad I didn’t. I can say the Saatva is very, very close to the feel of the Aireloom. Obviously time will tell, but I figure even if I need a new one in 5 years I’m still ahead of the game financially.
I’ll update again in 30 days, but if you’re a side sleeper, so far the plush is great and can’t stress enough it’s not too soft. I can also say the 11.5 is fine with box spring. If you consider the 14.5 I recommend measuring. (Edit to correct spell check errors)
They seem to get high ratings on most review sites I've come across. I'm considering the Saatva Classic. I tend to start on my back when I go to bed, end up on my side, and wake up with a sore hip so I'm leaning towards the plush soft model. I'm on the small side(5'4" 125 lbs.) and their website says the luxury firm(the most commonly purchased)may be too hard for my weight. Anyone had experience with this brand or have suggestions for other brands/styles? Thanks.
meh,, not a fan of it. Here is a better mattress
My mom is 5’2 and 150lbs about 2 years ago she bought a Saatva classic in luxury firm. Her old mattress had been sagging and she probably should have replaced it about a year earlier. She had hip pain before she got the new mattress and ended up doing 2 months of physical therapy and daily walks to get her hip pain to go away completely since then.
She finds the mattress to be serviceable and of good quality. The pillow top is fairly plush, more plush than my mattress (I went with Parachute). It has not started to sag yet or have any noticeable wear beyond initial breaking in. It’s no magical super plush yet supportive Stearns and Foster of 20 years ago - which was her point of reference but current reviews of S&F doesn’t seem to generally live up to its old reputation.
After some discussion with other sub member's, I decided to try and leave a more thorough and detailed review of the mattress I wound up buying after a many week-long search. I scoured this sub, read countless reviews from sleepopolis/CNET/Forbes/NYTIMES/Toms whatever, learned all about the differences in materials and construction, what my sleeping styles should prefer, and then went to 3 stores to lay on every mattress they had to compare their material makeup and the actual feeling.
To give you context, I am a man, 5'10", 150lbs, and a combo sleeper (~70% side sleeper, 20% stomach sleeper, 10% back sleeper). My previous mattress was an all-foam serta with an extra firm 3" topper. I decided I wanted a hybrid. I like a slightly stiffer mattress with good support and being a combo sleeper, I move around a lot. So springs are supposed to help with movement, but I do like the top to be comfortable (foam/latex comfort layer).
In the stores, my favorite mattresses were the Denver Mattress Co Telluride Medium, the Purple Restore Soft, and the Helix Midnight Luxe Medium-firm. I wound up buying a Saatva Classic 11.5" luxury firm -- and against better judgment, I bought it sight-unseen. It had the same construction as the DMCo. Telluride, and in a head-to-head comparison with the Helix (sleepopolis), the saatva came out on top. I was offered an absurd clearance price on it, so I thought I couldn't lose!
First impressions: First time laying on it, immediately not as nice or high-quality feeling as the other three. It was surprisingly springy, like a surface-wide springboard, which felt very cheap to me. The closest I can compare that feeling to was when laying on the avacado eco and green (latex top hybrids). The lumbar support was very nice, though. It did not feel very well padded on top, fairly close to the springs, and fairly stiff feeling but not particularly uncomfortable.
First night: Great when falling asleep on my back. By 12am, I was awake and uncomfortable. Immediately realizing this is a bad mattress for side sleeping, my shoulders were already starting to ache. There is almost no give for someone at my weight and the mattress was proving to be much firmer than originally assumed. By 3am... I am googling mattress pads. I am in quite a bit of pain all across my back and shoulders -- I cant get comfortable on my stomach as it seems my head and neck will not line up with the added support around my shoulders. Im realizing I've made a terrible mistake. This mattress was somehow compared to the helix by sleepopolis as the same firmness. I spent 3 nights on the helix, the saatva is in no way the same firmness. It is easily two points stiffer.
Second night: Somehow, not nearly as bad. I am actually feeling relatively comfortable on my stomach, having gotten the pillow positioning figured out. But I didnt even attempt to sleep on my side! Sticking to just my stomach and back, I actually had a decent night's sleep. Still much, much too stiff for side sleeping. I think avoiding this prevented the aches from starting, allowing me to stay comfortable on my stomach.
Third night: The tempur-pedic 3" foam topper arrives! This is thicker and softer than anything I would have previously considered (remember, my last topper was an extra firm 3" topper). But on this firm of a mattress, I thought it might be necessary. And overall, it does feel really nice. Its the right amount of give for me to sleep on my side, still very comfortable on my back, and even my stomach is reasonably comfortable due to that little added lumbar support in the mattress. Im not sure this is the perfect setup, I would have preferred the DMCo. Telluride, but for the price I am satisfied and sleeping comfortably.
All said and done, I'm ~$750 into this, so I cant complain too much (considering this mattress + topper when not on sale/clearance is ~$2500). Would I have bought this in hindsight? No. But I'm happy with where I wound up for the price. The moral of this story is NOT to believe reviews at face value (come on sleepopplis!), not to buy something you have not tried at least once, and to make sure you understand what firmness you truly need for your sleeping style (and more importantly that the mattress actually is that firmness!). Lastly, make sure whatever you buy has a full return policy, because no matter how much you try and prepare yourself, the experience is entirely unique and subjective to you.
Edit: after a few more nights on this, I have to say, it is actually quite comfortable. I’m sleeping really well and changing positions less far than often. This topper is pretty sweet.
Ok so I have purchased one of the saatva mattresses because sleep foundation and other websites gave it good reviews. Consumer affairs had many decent reviews. But I am seeing a lot of people saying it breaks down fast, which, for the amount of money it costs, is concerning to me. Should I cancel that order?
I'm a little stressed about this purchase now, whereas before I was pretty excited about it. It is the first time I've bought a mattress on my own, I've been using the one my dad bought me in college for the past 9 years.
Edit: Hey I just thought I'd update this... I have had my mattress for a couple weeks now. In light of the many reviews saying they break down quickly, I also preemptively bought a mattress pad from a company called silk and snow. It is latex, and was about $200 ish when I bought it on sale. My logic was that I would help extend my mattress for longer, and it would help me feel less anxious about anything breaking down. Maybe that's silly in light of purchasing a mattress, but I don't regret it at all, because my new bed is ABSURDLY comfortable. Back pain that I had previously been in physical therapy for has improved immensely, in fact, it is nearly gone. Considering how much the physical therapy cost me over time, I am pleased with this. I would say it's firm(ish). There's still a lot of bounce. I think some of that is a function of the mattress pad. You definitely don't sink into it like you would with memory foam (I hate that sensation, also that causes me shoulder pain). It's probably also worth noting, the mattress I had previously (see above) was hardly a high quality mattress. So, really, it's not much for me to feel like things are a step up.
My biggest complaints are two fold: One was the delivery. I live alone and have weak, noodly arms so I was really banking on that delivery. Otherwise I'd be trying to haul a mattress in a box up a walkup apartment. But saatva I don't think pays too much attention to the companies they work with. I am lucky I had telework with my job, because the company ONLY delivered on weekdays! The company itself was professional, so was saatva's customer service, but working this out was a pain.
I also had issues with some of the ecofriendly ratings... I think there are maybe better companies in that department. Originally, I was considering an avocado mattress. However, everyone and their brother said that mattress was ROCK solid. And my experience with hard mattresses is pain. So I decided against it.
If I remember, I will come back to this post in like 6 months or a year or whatever and update accordingly with how it's going. Maybe that will help ease the mattress shopping concerns for others. I will let you know how it's holding up and if I had to replace it at all.
I am 5-9, 170 lb, back and side sleeper, no stomach.
I already tried the Luxury Firm, but I also wanted to test the Firm, which I am currently. The Luxury Firm was good, but I wasn't too sure. I thought I'd try the Firm and see if I could sleep only on my back, but I keep rolling to my side, plus the Firm is still too hard even if I was strictly a back sleeper.
I heard from the Youtuber RizKnows that the Plush Soft was good for combo sleepers, but others have stated that it is only good for strict side sleepers.
So if you have tried the Plush Soft, do you think that a combo back/side sleeper of my stats would do fine on it?
We are looking for a new mattress. My husband wants to look at Saatva, in store. I have back pain and a spinal lumbar fusion. He’s having shoulder pain. He’s a heavier guy(250pds). I recently tried mattresses at a mattress. My favorite was the beauty rest black lux estate. We have a king bed. We are thinking we will have to get a spilt king due to our different “plush” comfort.
Hope I made the right decision . I’m a side sleeper but on the heavier side so they recommend the Luxury Firm . I’ve read excellent …..and also bad reviews so I’m taking a chance . The delivery and setup and removal of the old mattress is a plus . And if I need to return , I’ll be out $99 and be sad . Meanwhile , If I need a plan B …… Side sleeper , some neck/shoulder pain ( may be raised to crappy pillows so that’s the next purchase ) hot sleeper . Any advice/recommendations pillows or mattress ?
My wife and I first had an Ikea mattress (can't remember the name, but on the softer side) for 3-4 years, then got the Tuft and Needle mattress (too firm, got a topper which made it too soft and hot), which we then exchanged for the Amerisleep AS3 that we've now had for a little over two years. While she doesn't have any qualms with the AS3, I find it to be too firm for me (I'm probably 80% side-sleeper) and hella hot—it's winter in Chicago and I have to sleep with the window open or I'm sweating.
Since I sleep hot, I'm wanting to go back to an innerspring mattress as I've noticed when I've slept at hotels that those beds do much better on air circulation. I also appreciate the responsiveness of coiled mattresses—I think with memory foam my body sort of feels stuck and I wake up to find a new position. Searching for innerspring mattresses I've landed on the Saatva, but the luxury firm seems for many people, especially side-sleepers, to be too firm. And I've read some reviews that Saatva's plush is very similar to AS3's firmness, which would make it a good compromise between my wife and I (she's mostly back and some side). We are 130lbs and 160lbs so I think firm mattresses feel extra firm for us.
Anyone have any advice or could compare it to the T&N or Amerisleep mattresses? I generally wouldn't worry about pulling the trigger, but that $99 return fee when many online mattress companies offer free shipping both ways is making me second-guess the decision.
Everyone has different sensitivities but I've read of several that experienced the Saatva to sleep unbearably hot. Regarding their $99 return fee, to be fair they provide white glove delivery included with the purchase and then charge for a similar pickup on returns. Most other companies that don't charge for returns generally require you to arrange for a charitable donation and then provide them with a receipt for tax purposes, or at best they arrange for a pickup by a junk or recycling service. Personally I find charging a reasonable fee for pickup of a return to be an honest way of doing business, rather than raising their price for all customers to cover their cost of those making returns.
Saatva does run firmer because latex is more firm than foam and they don’t offer super soft latex- I would get the softest Saatva you can find on their website if you try them. I would still think their plush soft is probably similar to a firm memory foam mattress though, so if you like firm beds they probably will work great.
I’m pretty disappointed. I have to return the Saatva. The way they described made me think it was firm but it still had a give to it or a softer top, this thing is ultra firm. I went to the nearest mattress store to try new ones out today, and the Saatva was definitely more firm than other brands. I’m a side sleeper and it made it really uncomfortable, and although they were going to send a topper for free I decided that was a waste of my time. It should just come with a topper. After looking into more on Reddit, I see a lot of people had the same issue. So I’m out $99 processing fee to return this and now I’m dealing with this headache of waiting on them to come get it.
I had a latex mattress with a wool topper before I moved cross country, but I didn't want to lug the mattress with me so I gave it away. I had been interested in an inner spring mattress primarily because I found latex to be a little too dynamic in terms of temperature (that is, when it was colder out, the mattress was firmer, etc).
I prefer a lot of contour. I'm 5'10" and about 168 and generally find without contour I end up with hip or shoulder soreness that wakes me up at night (side sleeper). I chose the Saatva Classic (plush, the softest one they make in that line) and at first I loved it. I used my wool topper and a Chili Pad Dock Pro (crucial for temperature regulation...just a game changer) and for about 5ish months it was fantastic. Then in the last few weeks it seemed to change and I was waking up often with shoulder discomfort. I called Saatva and arranged for a return (their CS is fantastic) and then I thought, well, in the meantime, let me see if rotating it makes a difference.
I rotated it last night before bed and it actually did make a difference! Now I'm wondering: should I keep it, or will the rotated portion of the bed just wind up being uncomfortable in 5 months like the first "side" did?
Debating going back to a latex mattress but it seems like nobody here can agree with latex company is best in terms of customization and returns (I'd get something like talalay soft on top, then dunlop medium and then dunlop firm while keeping my wool topper).
Curious what you think I should do! If I were to rotate my mattress back 180 in 6 months, would it be just as uncomfortable as it was before I rotated it? Or does rotating a mattress actually allow the other side to "reset" as it were?
Long story short in case you’ve seen my post before, I was perfectly happy with the Saatva classic luxury firm. It was not perfect, but it was good enough. My husband hated it. We were able to go to a Saatva store and he loved the memory foam hybrid. We bought it. It was comfortable for the first couple of months. But then it got too hard so we added the free mattress topper. Now, even the free mattress topper is no longer soft enough. It feels like after using the mattress topper constantly for the last several months, it’s just flattened out.
I’m trying to decide if we should just get another mattress topper, or if we should just send this one back and look for a different mattress. Of course we need to find the other mattress before we send this back and we only have one month left. Help!!!
Please, please please help! I only have a few weeks left to resolve this.
