Sonata's are generally good, if you like it get it checked by a mechanic and if they give the thumbs up you are good to go.
However... because this is reddit and people get to provide their opinion: You are confusing crash worthiness with safety. There are many other aspects to consider - good tires, and good maintenance for example. Also, driving skills - I am hugely in favour of people taking some advanced driving courses - even one or two. You survive ALL the crashes that never happen, and as the saying goes "you don't know what you don't know". IMHO, if auto manufacturers were in the business of helping people be better drivers, we would have a whole different view of what makes travelling by car safe.

What used cars are very safe and fairly reliable/low cost of ownership? I can do basic maintenance myself like changing an alternator in a Corolla or something equally easy.

If you are concerned about crashworthiness, check out the IIHS statistics. Personally, at anywhere around the $6k price point, I'd focus on making sure the tires, brakes, suspension and steering parts are in good shape, and hopefully they know how to drive safely.
