What are the pros and cons of working for a larger org?

I’ve only ever worked for early to late stage startups, and I’m sick of it. CEOs that wake up one day and decide to completely change the direction of the company, constantly changing territories, revolving door of sales leaders, over hiring, etc.

In my mid 20s it was really exciting and offered lots of growth opportunities, but im just burnt out and don’t want to chase the IPO anymore.

People that are in sales at larger more established orgs, how do you like it? I’m talking Salesforce, atlassian, workday, Servicenow, etc.

My guess is OTEs are slightly lower, but more attainable. Less of a chance to have a crazy year where you can make north of $500k, and experience can vary largely down to what team your on, product you’re selling, and territory that you have (I would argue this is the case for any sales role).

If a company got to a certain size, that means people actually take meetings, want to buy the product, and there is somewhat of a market for it. Sales is one of the most risky departments to work for in a startup, because your chances of making it a full year, let alone through a 4 year vesting schedule, let alone to some kind of a favorable exit, are extremely low. Somehow at the startup I worked for, they needed more people in marketing than we had in sales to produce 2-3 whitepapers a year. No shit they had a marketing leader, a coordinator, a writer, and a UX person. We had 1 AE.

Dude never ever again you'll see me join an early Start-Up. I've wasted enought years there. The base pay is low coz "we can't afford it yet" and your variable is also low as fuck in the end coz' who the fuck is gonna buy from a nobody company ? I know that if you're a skilled salesman you will still manage to sell, but come on...that skilled salesman will still have a much easier time if his product is Salesforce CRM rather than Unknown CRM number 678. Even if the start-up gives you a better %, good luck for making a comparable wage. Also I had almost zero tool and a very low internal support. The bait they used for me was "when we finally scale, you will be able to have a golden managerial C-level position". Ofc it didnt happen...and you know why ? Mostly because at some point the CEO was just absent. He was expecting us to build the whole company for him while he just collects the benefits. Fuck that shit.
