What do you guys think about King Salman of Saudi Arabia? As far as I know he doesn't do much due to age and his sons do most of the running of the country. Also, how does Saudi succession work?
As a constitutionalist, I think the lack of the role of the people in running the government is a great error that Saudi Arabia has. TIL the current King of Saudi Arabia, Salman, is the son of Abdul-Aziz, who founded the modern kingdom in 1932 and was its first ruler. Abdul-Aziz, also known as Ibn Saud, was born in 1875.
Sentiment about Saudi Arabia aside, I thought it was very interesting how a man born in 1-8-fucking-7-5 not only has a living son, but a living son ruling the kingdom he (the father) created. Saudis tend to exaggerate their rulers height out of admiration, many of them claim that Bin salman is over 6’3, but we can tell from his pictures with other government officials like Donald trump and joe Biden that he is a weak 6’1 guy. That being said king Abdulaziz is certainly very tall by his country’s standards, however, Saudi males average height is about 169 cm so he could’ve been in the 190-195 cm range at most if we’ve looked at his pictures with other Saudis. TIL that since 1953, every King of Saudi Arabia has been a son of the first king, Abdulaziz. His oldest son was born in 1900 and the youngest in 1952. He has roughly 1,000 grandchildren.
Saudi Arabia practices agnatic seniority, which means that the throne doesn't pass from father to child like in Western monarchies, but rather "sideways" to his brothers instead. This might be why Saudi society can seem conservative and resistant to change. More on reddit.com
