Does everyone know about salvage grocers?

I hate to give away my hidden gems, but salvage grocery can be a huge money saver. If you scroll down a bit on that link, you'll find a map showing salvage grocery in nearly every state.

Not all are equal (I find Grocery Outlet Bargain Market to be not that cheap), but there can be killer deals at some of the smaller local chains

You may have to rummage through stuff with a best by date during the Obama administration, but there's real good stuff in there too.

Here are some of today's highlights

Coffee for $1 (12oz bag) Huge cans of Saurkraut for $1 Bread crumbs, $.75 Tons of herbs and spices for $.50 Breakfast cereals $.50 Olives $.33 for a small can Name brand salad dressings $.60-$.85 Campbell's soup $.50 Crackers $1 Various pastas $.50-$.75 Paper towels 6/$3 Lunchables $.67 Half gallon juice $.50-$1

I have a small chain one like 10 minutes away from me, it’s an absolute life saver. I’ve compared my bill to what I would have paid at a regular grocery store, usually it equals about 70% off retail

Preach! These stores are such a great way to save. Some are better than others, for sure. But also understand that selection varies - so if the first visit is a “miss”, try again another time. I often get the $1.49 Ben & Jerry’s (no, there won’t be a full selection of flavors), sausage ($1.99/lb) and yogurt (3/$1). The real fun is the unexpected bargains. My last visit they had sopressata packages 2/$1 - worked out to $2.50/lb. I grabbed a bunch and froze what we won’t use immediately. They also had Bonne Maman jam for $1.99. And before someone says none of that is especially healthy, their fresh produce prices are 30-40% less than regular grocery stores. That’s only true for produce that’s somewhat local - it isn’t the place to buy a pineapple, for example. There’s one that is a 25 minute drive from my house that I go to at least once a month. And another that’s farther away that I go to when I’m out that way. The second one has great deals on chicken - my fave is 40# of boneless skinless chicken breasts for $45. Yes, that means I have to go home, separate and freeze it - saving on groceries often means a little work. Sometimes you can see why things are in the discount/salvage store in the news - the news reported there was a glut of cheese on the global market. Sure enough, on my next visit there was triple cream Brie for $0.99/ lb and a ton of other gorgeous European cheeses. Remember the controversy about the CEO of Goya’s political remarks? The news said that overall there was a spike in sales, but I can tell you that there was a TON of Goya products in the discount/salvage stores. Nothing wrong with any of it - demand shifted unexpectedly and the overage went to the discount groceries. I think there are a couple of reasons more people don’t go there: the first is that they perceive it to be a poor person’s option, or that the items are past date or defective in some way. Depending on the store, you need to watch dates. But also be realistic about dates - there are dates that matter and dates that don’t matter. I’ve only ever had to throw out one thing - I bought hamburger helper for my kids, it was out of date and absolutely horrible. The perception that it’s a poor person’s store is something you have to examine within yourself. I personally don’t care and have never cared but many people do. I care about the quality of food and the price - and I’m not willing to pay more for a pretty store in a cool neighborhood.
