r/4kTV on Reddit: Saw some cheap 85" Samsungs and LGs at Sam's Club and am looking for advice
October 23, 2023 -

Hi, I've been trying to figure out a good TV for my parents. We were at Sam's Club last weekend and a Samsung CU7000 85" and LG UR8000 86" were both on clearance for ~$1000 which seems really cheap for the size. They're usually very slow to upgrade TVs and they've had our current Samsung F6300 65" from back when that was a fancy big size lol. And we had some old Samsung 40" way before that. So they have some brand loyalty to Samsung since that's like 15 years of good TVs that lasted forever (a family member is still using the 40"). But from reading around, it seems both Samsung and LG's budget models aren't nearly as good as they should be nowadays. So I'm not sure these clearance deals are so great after all.

99% of their usage is streaming movies (we recently got fiber so we have fast internet for once, but our streaming quality is still well under 1080p? dunno the deal with that) and even that isn't an everyday thing so I know they would still be fine with the current TV for a while. Just the $1000 85" Samsung really caught our attention value-wise. I'm usually the guy who knows all the tech stuff but I never watch TV so all of these modern specs seem really confusing to me, all I know is buy an OLED but those are out of their price range at this size for now. At the end of the day I would hope that TVs have advanced enough over nearly a decade that even a shitty 4k TV today will blow our old ass 1080p Samsung out of the water.

So basically, are the usual grievances this sub has with these models (CU7000/8000, UR8000, etc) warranted? Or are they a bit overblown given the budget? And if anyone has owned an F6300 in the past, a firsthand comparison to newer models would be much appreciated too. Thanks!

Yeah the automod replies lol. Our current TV doesn't have local dimming either, doesn't get super bright (dark room for viewing anyways), and is also 60hz (not sure if that matters for movies?) The recommended TCL is like $600 more expensive too. Also if anyone has any tips on how to get good streaming quality on netflix/prime/etc that would be very helpful, thanks! Idk anything about those platforms but with our new gigabit fiber idk how we're getting like 360p streams lol

Cheap = Not Good for an 85 So they have some brand loyalty to Samsung since that's like 15 years of good TVs that lasted forever (a family member is still using the 40"). Samsung isn't the same company back around 2016 they started a year over year decline in quality 99% of their usage is streaming movies (we recently got fiber so we have fast internet for once, but our streaming quality is still well under 1080p? dunno the deal with that) and even that isn't an everyday thing so I know they would still be fine with the current TV for a while. Sony X85K Just the $1000 85" Samsung really caught our attention value-wise. its not a good value because poor picture quality like your previous Samsung might actually look BETTER on things like cable and QA/QC So basically, are the usual grievances this sub has with these models (CU7000/8000, UR8000, etc) warranted? yes get them a 75 inch X85K unless they are sitting 13+ feet away

There is no samsung below the Q8, or the Q70R that is worth buying, period.
