r/Frugal on Reddit: Got auto insurance and a Costco/Sam's Club membership? Call your insurance company to see if they will give you a discount!
June 5, 2012 -

I discovered yesterday that my auto insurance (Progressive) gives a nice discount if you have a Costco or Sam's Club membership. It's their 2nd best discount after AAA membership.

How much of a discount? Oh, only about $95 every six months! So with that alone my Costco membership has more than paid for itself after only half a year!

I expect other auto insurers also offer this discount too. And even if they don't, I recommend calling yours up and finding out what other discounts you might be eligible for.

Good luck fellow frugits!

Edit: said discount doesn't apply to all auto insurance (I guess not even to all Progressive auto insurance products). But still a good idea to check with your auto insurance provider to see if they do offer a discount to Costco/Sam's Club members. Plus, as FFFan92 points out, Costco membership can get you lots of other discounts with other companies. And I'm sure the same is true for Sam's Club membership.

January 26, 2019 - I personally think they're entire company (and all of their ventures is a scam) and they're in big financial trouble. But, that's simply my opinion and I believe here in these United States each person is entitled to opinions. ... Interesting topic and very timely. We were considering moving to Good Sam insurance for the TT.

Sam's Club has collected 59 reviews with an average score of 1.97 Today is December 27. I went to Sam’s Club after putting $250 of groceries in my cart. I didn’t understand at first what was going on only two tellers working self checkout was completely a disaster. It was closed and two tellers checking people out lines were so long people were just leaving their carts and walking out. Turns out I waited an hour and 10 minutes online when I get to TELLER she says your card is not loading. The computer is down. It’s not working right the guy in front of me had $250 worth of groceries. The same

r/samsclub on Reddit: Reporting back my experience with Sam's Club Auto Buying Program.
November 29, 2025 -

I just bought a car from Sam's Club. The process was pretty easy, and price is good as well. Especially for the 4Runner model I bought that is high in demand and most dealerships not only don't haggle, they also add lots of markups. But with Sam's Club program I was able to get a 3000 discount without saying anything. Then I was able to get the dealership to take another 1000 off (they refused to haggle on the car's price. This 1000 was from dealership add-ons. They tried to sell me a pre-installed tracker which collects and sells my data to 3rd parties. I told them to take that charge off or no deal, and they did eventually.)

And I received the 150 bucks gift card from Sam's Club once I reported the purchase to sam's.

I like the program a lot. Will use again in the future.

Looks like the Sam's program runs through Truecar. Ultimately these programs are all lead generators for dealerships but that doesn't mean at all that they're bad. They work especially well for folks that aren't experienced in haggling or don't want to haggle excessively. Our last 2 new cars we did one through Truecar and the other through Costco Auto program. Both times we knew pretty much exactly what we wanted and about what price should be so we were just shopping price. Not pushing or advocating for either of these programs or any others. They're all tools. We cross shopped those and several more programs for both vehicles as well as walking into several dealers. For the one through Truecar we entered the info and a few hours later got emailed a deal that blew everything else out of the water, so cheap we actually wondered what the catch was. Tried to get local dealer to match and they told us to go buy that one. Ended up being total paid, including tax, title, interest, etc was under msrp on a mid range CRV. Did 90% of the deal over email and drove 2 hours to sign and pick it up. For the second car, which was a fair bit less common than the CRV, Truecar got me nowhere, no good offers. Most offers were for a whole different model because dealers just didn't have anything else to send. I walked into several dealers and did the whole song and dance to get a final quote of sticker or sticker plus some nonsense. Nope to that. Ended up calling Costco auto program and we started at closest dealerships and worked to further away until some place had the exact car for the "Costco price" Took about 45 mins total, Rep was phenomenal. At one point I said, "I'm sorry if you guys have calls per hour metrics or something because I'm blowing yours up" She said, "All we care about is finding you your car and we're going to do that" Dealer emailed me the Costco price sheet ($2k under msrp). Over text we confirmed no add-ons, ran credit for the promo apr, and put a deposit down. Drove 3 hours up that night to pick it up. I think what helped was that we knew exactly what we wanted, had already test driven, and were clear that if the numbers worked we were immediate buyers. We had independent financing arranged but went with dealer/manufacturer financing for both because they gave best rate. It was complete no bullshit, I knew within a buck or two what the payment would be because I did the math in advance. When they confirmed that number we signed. Moral of the story is: do your research, figure out what you want and then use all the available programs and offers to compare and find the best deal. You'll end up getting absolutely spammed with calls and email for a bit but once you've bought just tell them that and they'll knock it off. On the flip side my dad bought a new car a while back and he's a haggler to the core. He did the old, "I'm going to head out, if you decide you want to sell it for $x out the door, give me a call". Phone rang and bought it for $x a couple days later. What was most interesting about both of my purchases was chatting with salesperson and sales manager at each dealer. I talked about how different the process was than how things used to be. No 4 square sales nonsense, no negotiating on payment, etc. (Although the finance office upsell is still there). All of them said some version of "That's old school stuff. Most customers hate it. We do things differently and we're doing everything we can to put those other dealers out of business" Also, if anyone is a sicko like me and really interested in how all this stuff works join the askcarsales subreddit. You'll get all the tea on car sales including all the nasty sides of it along with a ton of snark from sales people, managers and finance folks that make well into 6 figures but hate the world.

How much did you end up paying? What year was the car?
