Costco, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s are the three major U.S. warehouse clubs, each with distinct strengths depending on your shopping needs.

Costco is known for premium quality, higher-end products, and a global footprint with over 800 locations. It offers the highest membership fee ($65/year) but provides exceptional value on luxury items like wine, diamonds, and organic goods. Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand is highly regarded, and its food court (with $1.50 hot dogs) is a popular draw. However, it has fewer SKUs (~4,000) and less flexibility with coupons or smaller package sizes.

Sam’s Club, owned by Walmart, focuses on lowest prices and everyday value. With $50/year membership, it’s the cheapest option and offers free curbside pickup, Scan & Go technology, and free shipping on orders over $50. It has a broader selection (6,000–7,000 SKUs), better healthcare services, and more consistent inventory than Costco. However, it doesn’t accept manufacturer coupons and has a less premium feel.

BJ’s is best for families and East Coast shoppers, with 255 locations primarily on the East Coast. It offers smaller package sizes, a wider variety of household brands, and accepts manufacturer coupons—a major savings advantage. BJ’s has longer hours, shorter gas lines, and in-store delis. Its $60/year membership is slightly higher than Sam’s but lower than Costco’s. It carries more than 7,000 SKUs and feels more like a grocery store than a warehouse.

Key Takeaways:

  • Best for quality & luxury: Costco

  • Best for lowest prices & convenience: Sam’s Club

  • Best for families, smaller packages & coupons: BJ’s

For most shoppers, Sam’s Club offers the best overall value, especially when factoring in membership cost and online perks. However, Costco excels in premium products, and BJ’s wins for flexibility and local access. Many members use two or more clubs to maximize savings.

So I've only come across them rarely. I don't regard a person saying "would you like to try a hotdog sample?" as bugging. Maybe BJ's is different, but I've never been in one. Nor a Sam's Club. ... Costco has great service and great return policies, as far as we're concerned. More on bogleheads.org

Costco vs. BJs vs Sam’s Club
I've never really noticed much of a difference, tbh. However! I prefer the way Costco treats their employees (Sam's Club is owned by Walmart), and I'm fortunate enough to be able to vote with my dollars, so I use Costco. More on reddit.com

Sams, Bjs, Costco
Costco changes its stock depending on local shopping habits and demographics so it's a good idea to tour your local store as a guest of a member before making your decision. Also, depending on local laws you may or may not be able to use the pharmacy without a membership. In general, Costco's gasoline consistently costs less than major chains, its pharmacy negotiates the best out of pocket prices (always ask the pharmacist: your out of pocket price may be less than your deductible), and their auto center is competitive. Costco's food court has held the line on prices and beats most other fast food. Edit: apparently pharmacy access without a membership is chain-wide policy now. Overall Costco focuses on offering quality products fewer price points. Costco isn't the place to find the cheapest sheets and towels, but if you're looking for midrange linens they're often the best deal for the price. Where Costco really shines is customer service. They pay their people a living wage so Costco employees care about doing the job right. For instance it was a Costco Optical employee who figured out one of my eyes has a focal point 3 mm higher than the other, which may seem like a small matter but it affects the prescription because a standard lens won't focus correctly unless it's crooked. No other optical test had ever spotted this. Sooner or later service will matter, and you may not realize when you need it. (I hadn't). My main experience with Sam's Club was picking up a reserve order with a friend who has a membership there. They'd reserved a dozen frozen quiches for an event using the online system, and then called in advance to confirm everything was in order, but on the morning of the event only five quiches were there. None of the store employees had an explanation or gave a damn, and customer service gave the run-around. We ended up having to drive to a different Sam's Club and were nearly late for the event. Also regarding Costco: people tend to love it or hate it depending on how they shop. The people who go on weekends for free samples and make impulse purchases tend to decide the place is a waste; the people who love it shop from a list and check the household inventory before leaving home. And run a search specifically for Costco Business Center. Business Center stores are the restaurant supply arm of Costco. That's the place where you get the best volume discounts, such as mozzarella cheese at $2/lb if you're willing to buy 6 lbs of it. More on reddit.com

BJ's vs Costco vs Sam's Club? | Early Retirement
June 8, 2024 - I like BJs best in that the quantities and sizes fit us better as a retired couple and BJs was closest to our Florida condo. However, Costco will be closest to our new home in Texas so I think we'll get rid of BJ's (none nearby) and Sam's Club (joined via a Groupon and it's ok, but nothing special).

Comparing BJ’s vs Costco vs Sam’s Club | Advisorpedia
All three wholesale clubs have online shopping and in-store shopping. There are significant differences, however, among the three stores. BJ’s is the worst with customer care in online shopping. First, it is more difficult to use the company's online shopping site. Second, the delivery takes two to four weeks rather than days with Costco and Sam’s Club.

March 9, 2014 - Sam's decision was how each employer treats their employees. Personally we like Costco's philosophy towards their employees and wish to support that with our shopping dollars. ... I have all 3. If I had to choose 1 it would be Costco. The only sales at the BJ's I go to is one on the way out and I just wave them off. ... Personally, my favorite club store was BJs when I had one locally.

Answer: I've shopped at BJ's and Costco and found them to be pretty similar. I don't think I've been to a Sam's but would assume they're similar too. A major plus for Costco, they sell hearing aids at a fabulous price (OR at least they did some years ago). I joined Costco for that reason, even w...
