r/GalaxyNote20 on Reddit: what's been your experience with the Note 20 (not ultra)
May 1, 2019 -

So I've finally after so many years of owning phones am getting the latest version of a phone in a series relatively close to when it was released.

I'm upgrading from the Note 8 and I wanna know what other peoples experiences have been so far with the Note 20 e.g.

  • whats the aerial connection like - wifi and 4g/5g

  • hows the phone audio and microphone quality

  • lifespan (has it been started to run slow for any reason - full memory, any overheating etc).

  • what about battery? i use a lot of high battery usage apps like youtube and google maps, and just general high internet usage on 5g so i am aware batteries will reach zero quicker because of it.

  • usability? i have tiny hands and while i dont usually need to use my phone one handed, i do struggle with it.

  • and durability. like does it feel flimsy, is the material of it good quality. if i had it in my back pocket and i sat down would i accidentally bend it?

TLDR: whats been some pros and cons with your experience?

Here's my thoughts that I posted a few weeks ago. I've had my Note 20 (US Snapdragon) since it's launch in August.

I went with the regular one for the following reasons

  • Flat screen - This was one of the biggest reasons. I hate the curved displays. They add nothing to the actual functionality of the phone and make screen protectors a huge pain in the ass to install.

  • Size - 6.7" is the ideal size for me. 6.9", while not that much bigger, is big enough that it won't fit in some of my pockets (even more so with a case), especially when winter comes and I have to bust out my coats.

  • Cost - I got my phone from T-Mobile and even with the 50% trade in promo, my down-payment on an Ultra would have been over $600 after taxes.

My battery life has been excellent. I'm averaging being around 50% when I get home from work, I got nowhere close to that with my Note 8 or 10. Having the 4500mah battery has been amazing.

I'm well aware that the Ultra, from a spec perspective, is the better phone, but it's not the better phone for some people. I wouldn't recommend the Note 20 if you don't (or can't) get it on a trade in promotion, as I agree that it's overpriced. However, if you can get it on a trade-in (and aren't super concerned about specs), it's a fantastic device.

I haven't had any performance issues, unlike with my Note 10, which would get random lockups on Chrome and Edge.

My only complaints with are the Note 20 are these

  • 128GB downgrade - This applies to both phones. The fact that they dropped from 256GB to 128GB on the US Snapdragon models sucks ass.

  • No microSD card - It sucks that there's no microSD as it really could use one (and we all know it was removed to use as a marketing point for the Ultra).

1080p60hz honestly doesn't bother me.

The fact that it has a plastic back is another thing that doesn't both me, either.

The regular Note 20 is a fantastic phone that's a bit overpriced.

Phenomenal. Sure, the plastic back and flat screen feels less premium, but this is a fantastic phone. I don't have a 5G plan so I can't comment on that, but 4G connectivity is good. Audio is great with the dual speakers, microphone is nothing special but does the job.

I've had it close to 2 months and battery life is amazing, and I have the Exynos variant. I easily get through a whole day, sometimes even 2 with moderate usage. No slow downs, no app crashes, nothing.

I have big hands so I can one hand this phone easy, but I avoid big bulky cases. S pen is on the left hand side which people like to moan about but really isn't a problem for me at all.

I also upgraded from the Note 8 and have no regrets. Go for it mate. £949 for this phone is a lot though, I got it for £200 off on an online deal

It’s easy to love the Note 20’s S-Pen and the fun versatility of its triple-camera array. But its short battery life is testing, as is the sense that Samsung is really seeing how much profit it can squeeze out of each sale with this one, more so than usual. ... Goodbye Samsung Galaxy Note 20, you were a terrible phone | Digital Trends
December 15, 2022 - The back was plastic, the display was limited to 60Hz, and it was missing the camera tricks that made the Note 20 Ultra shine. It wasn’t a bad setup, but it wasn’t a $1,000 spec sheet. Right from the start, there were signs Samsung wasn’t trying as hard with the Galaxy Note 20.

Note 20 thoughts?
I had the s10+, and bought the note 10 last year. I have zero complaints about my note, but wish I just kept the S10+. I prefer the more rounded corners and never use the s pen. I will resist temptations this year. More on reddit.com

Note 8 to Note 20 Review
This is exactly what Samsung wants. Planned obsolescence. I forgot where I heard or read it, but someone broke it down that we've reached a bottleneck in technology. Back then phones upgraded so fast that it was easy to justify getting a new phone every two years. Around the time of the note 5, things started to slow down technologically. Heck, I'd still be on my note 4 if I didn't drop it in water. Now I remember, I heard this recently on planet money where they dug up an old podcast that's still relevant today. The guest stated that his note 4 he'd been using is far superior to the S8(?) because of replaceable battery and expandable memory. Around that time Samsung started glueing in the battery and took away the sd card. 80% of what we use our phones for works just fine on the 5-6 year old note 4. He said the only reason to make a non-replaceable battery and removing the sd slot was to force people to upgrade when something goes wrong with the phone because people (I'm guilty of this too) do not want to be without a phone for 5 days waiting for a replacement. There's plenty of people here that say the GPS issue is a ploy by Samsung to force us to upgrade and it seems there's a lot of evidence, albeit anecdotal, proving it. I had the same GPS problem a few months ago while biking and trying to find a route. I couldn't get a GPS fix even though I was in the middle of a big city and decided to cut the bike ride short and backtracked home. If the GPS problem isn't fixed soon, my next phone won't be a Samsung. I've been using a note since the note 2 and ever since the 4, it feels like they've been testing the limits of what they can tear away from us. The backlash when they took away the sd card from the 5 was big. I dropped my 4 into a bucket of water and didn't want to wait the 5 days for a replacement so I got the 5. Hated that damn phone. Waited for a good deal for the 6, but then they started exploding. Samsung ran a deal when they gave $400 for the note 5 to upgrade to the 8. Done. I'm going to use the 8 until it dies, if that's another 5 years I'm going to be really happy. But if this GPS thing isn't fixed, I'm going to jump ship because I think they're going to software brick everyone into a new phone after the 3 years support is over. Just like Apple. As others have stated, this feels like a class action lawsuit waiting to happen if they don't fix the GPS issue. Love the note series but there's no way I'm paying over $500 for a phone that's going to be dumped by the company after just 3 years. I built my own computer 6 years ago and it's still going strong. Not 4k strong but at least I didn't get suckered into a 3D TV, which is what all these new $1,000 phones feel like nowadays. More on reddit.com

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra - FULL Review (after 2 months of use) — ZONEofTECH
October 16, 2020 - Not even to mention the pretty serious HDR Processing issues that it had to the point here the Galaxy Note 10 and S10 from a year prior, actually had a better Dynamic Range with many other Reviewers complaining about this too. With all of this, you would expect Samsung to just completely revamp the Camera in the Note 20 Ultra, but it turns out, this is mostly the exact same Camera that the S20 Ultra had.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Review
Review: The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 is a lower-cost alternative to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. But is it better? The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 is a lower-cost alternative to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. It’s for people who want an S-Pen stylus but can’t stomach the very high price of the latter device. However, given its plastic back, it’s hard to view this device as value-led. The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 is quite pricey for a phone with a plastic rear. Its biggest issue is that the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 struggles to make it through a day of moderate use. All the reviews give the basic Samsung Galaxy Note 20 a 'thumbs down', are there any redeeming qualities of the new Note 20? - Quora
Answer (1 of 3): No, except for maybe the improved S-pen? Oh wiat, the Ultra has more improvement. Display? The $365 Pocophone X2 Pro has a better one. Expandable storage? No. Headphone jack? Even the so called “Ultra” doesn’t have that. 6.7″ screen? Yeah sure, if that’s worth a 1000 bucks to you...

Samsung Galaxy Note20 review: The plastic isn't the problem
October 7, 2020 - The S Pen seems identical at a glance to the version in the higher-end Note20 Ultra, though Samsung says it has a higher latency — I'm not sure whether that's a difference in the stylus itself or the lower refresh rate in the display. Either way, it's a few frames less laggy than the one in last year's Note, offers the usual (read: good) S Pen experience in software, and the hardware feels nice enough for a plastic stylus with a button in it. Speakers are also fine. As David noted in his review of the Note20 Ultra, the notification volume scale seems weighted pretty far toward "oh god my ears," but it's easy to turn down.
