The S3 frontier was released back in late 2016, making it 8 years old at this point. I'm not trying to defend Samsung but that might be enough service life for a smartwatch. Connected tool watches tend to last longer if that's your priority, for example the Fenix 5X came out around the same time, early 2017 iirc, and it still works fine with Garmin's ecosystem. I just read something about Samsung discontinuing support for the Gear series watches in 2025. While I know it won't work on newer Samsung phones (Why I won't upgrade over my Fold Z 3.) will it and all software for the Gear series cease to work after next year? Or is it just “support“ as in regular updates and service support? My Gear S3 works great for what I use it for and I can probably get a few more good years out of it, but not if it'll be a glorified paperweight by the end of next year.

The Gear 3 will still work and function you just unfortunately won't be able to update or buy any new watch faces or anything like that. if I'm not mistaken.

They are only killing Galaxy Store support which means you won't be able to install apps and watchfaces. Although, there's methods of sideloading .tpk and .wgt files. I made a collection of them on Internet Archive that i'm adding more to.
