How did San Francisco lost so much population in only three years??
SF is pretty expensive. A lot of folks who left work in tech and don’t actually need to be in person, so they left for cheaper pastures. That’s my explanation. I refuse to look up any data to back this up! More on reddit.com
SF population loss among largest in US
More notable than the drop in SF (-34k) is the jump in population in Sacramento (+74k), Fresno (+34k), San Joaquin (+55k), and Placer counties (+32k). That looks a lot like affordability and WFH to me. More on reddit.com

SF’s population drops again as city struggles to retain residents
The good buses are way too crowded, the apt inventory is very expensive and not that great. People want in unit washer/dryer, it’s a super premium to get. The fix is very simple: build more subway (muni rails underground) and build more dense new housing. (ALL INCOMES not just affordable). No need for fancy studies. Unfortunately the incompetence of our govt will not build the transportation we need. More on reddit.com

2 days ago - Since World War II, however, San Francisco has had to face the stark realities of urban life: congestion, air and water pollution, violence and vandalism, and the general decay of the inner city. San Francisco’s makeup has been changing as families, mainly white and middle-class, have moved to its suburbs, leaving the city to a population that, viewed statistically, tends to be older and to have fewer married people.

December 26, 2024 -
According to official data, in 2020, the city of San Francisco was inhabited by 873965 residents, in 2023 it has 808988 residents.
That's 64977 residents less in only three years.
Basically they lost the population of a small city in three years.
How did we lost so much population in such a brief time compared to other major American cities like LA, Chicago, Philly, Houston, Seattle, etc...
Thoughts?

it seems to me that a bunch of people that lived here pre-Covid didn't actually like living here and were only here for their tech jobs
