In 2025, almost 7.7 million people lived in the nine-county, 7,000-square-mile Bay Area region. Residents are spread throughout the 101 cities and in various unincorporated communities, the size and density of which vary widely.

The Sunset neighborhood has a largest number of residents while the Tenderloin, Nob Hill, and Chinatown have the highest numbers of residents per square mile (Figure 2). When examined by Areas of Vulnerability (a measure of the density of socioeconomically disadvantaged populations), areas that are not an AOV have a greater number of residents, however the AOV area has greater population density (Figure 3). By 2040, San Francisco’s population is expected to total about 1 million and by 2060, nearly 1.2 million (Figure 4).

San Francisco’s child and young adult (age 0-24) population shrank by 5% from about 184,000 in 2010 to 175,200 in 2020, while the city as a whole grew by 8%.

Over the last 20 plus years, between 2000 and 2023, population of San Francisco increased by 31,648. In this period, the peak population was 879,676 in the year 2018. The numbers suggest that the population has already reached its peak and is showing a trend of decline.

We believe using the recent years’ figures (see the table in next section) will make the estimation more accurate. Looking back last 13 years of San Francisco’s population, the growth rate is slow but consistent ranging from 0.70% to 1.63%, adding around 6,070 to 13,286 people each year ...

This figure represents a significant increase from previous decades. The city's growth rate, however, has slowed in recent years. This trend is in line with other major urban areas across the country.

Between 2022 and 2023 the population of San Francisco, CA declined from 851,036 to 836,321, a −1.73% decrease and its median household income grew from $136,689 to $141,446, a 3.48% increase.
