So I’m looking into my GCIH certification. I’d like to have it under my belt and my boss would like me to look into it as well. I’m employed as an Information Security Analyst right now so I’m really looking to get some better credentials to back myself and my work to get into a Senior role and more advanced roles down the line. However, everything I find on studying for it says to take the SANS course which comes at a pretty penny.
Did anyone else take this without taking the SANS course and felt comfortable taking the exam and passed? What materials did you use if you didn’t take the SANS course? My job will cover the exam cost but I don’t believe the course cost so I’m looking for other alternatives to prep. Any help is appreciated.

Almost impossible to pass the test without the current books. Everything in the book is testable material. Have your company pay for the class.

I'm currently doing the GCIH. The hardest part for me is buckling down to study. That being said theres nothing in this course I hadn't seen in college. Its all pretty basic so far besides memorizing linux commands which I'm just putting on my cheat sheet anyways. That being said. You should probably do the course.

are you paying out of pocket? it’s certainly possible to get that $10k back over the lifetime of that cert, it’s just a big chunk to pay at once. if your employer is paying, definitely worth. have i paid for a SANS cert out of pocket? yes. it stings, but i think the ROI can be there with how much employers value them.

While I think all SANS certs are outrageously & unrealistically priced (I got mine on a scholarship), out of the 3 I have I found GCIH the most valuable (I also have GSEC & GCIA). However if you have a particular area of interest I would target a SANS cert that correlates to it like forensics or cloud, as GCIH is just a broad IR cert (though a good one imo - it’s like juiced up Sec+). The SANS certs I have 100% had an impact on my career. That being said, I don’t know if I could ever justify paying for them out of pocket unfortunately. Which sucks, because they are amazing certs and I learned so much, but 10k is just too much for any kind of certification.
