The Santander student account offers a Railcard - but no AER. If I open said account, then switched to (for example) TSB for 5% AER, will I still be able to use the Santander rail card?

Once you've got the railcard they can't take it off you, regardless of whether you switch out later or not. My advice would be to open the Santander student account (remember to apply via topcashback for the £25 on top) then open the Edge account at the same time (apply via quidco for another £22, remember fee is optional if you read the Ts&Cs carefully) to get the 7% edge saver. You are then free to go round the other student accounts getting all the freebies (NatWest/RBS will give you £100 each, HSBC will probably come up with something etc), before finishing up on the one that will give you the biggest 0% overdraft to stooze. I'd avoid the TSB one though as it doesn't offer much worth having, 0% overdraft is one of the smaller ones and 5% can be beaten in savings accounts elsewhere and will be very unlikely to be as profitable as stoozing a large 0% OD so isn't worth having IMHO.

It's only a plastic card but if you're using something like trainline, you just add it as a 16-25 railcard and if someone checks your tickets, they ask to see your railcard. It worked that way for me when I went on a train to London, they check both the ticket and the railcard.

I transferred my 123 mini account to a Student Edge account so I could get this four year 16-25 railcard. I tried to add it to the GWR app, but it didn’t accept my download code. Then I downloaded the Railcard app, and that worked, so I now have the digital railcard on my phone, but it won’t apply when I try to buy a ticket on the GWR app. I also tried the Trainline app, didn’t work either, doesn’t even give me the option to add one only to buy one. Help!

When buying tickets on Trainline, just select that you have a 16-25 railcard on the home menu. That will show you the appropriate price. When prompted by the ticket officer to show your ticket and railcard, show your ticket in the trainline app and show your railcard in the railcard app.

There doesn't need to be any kind of direct digital connection between the railcard and the ticket buying app, you simply need to say which kind of railcard you have when buying the ticket in the app, so you get charged the discounted price, and then be able to display the digital railcard if needed when travelling. (It may be that the app with the railcard on also lets you buy tickets, but you're fine to buy discounted tickets with any other app, or at a ticket machine or whatever)
