The Best Way to Save Money on Groceries, According to Financial Advisers | The Kitchn
1 month ago - He and his coworker, Arnold, wholeheartedly agree with Sam and swear by meal planning around “a few core ingredients that can be used in multiple ways.” It’s helped them both “save money, reduce waste, and shop far more efficiently.” Going in with a clear plan means you’re less likely to impulse shop and overspend on items that you don’t need.

Tips for saving on groceries
I buy my meat when they go on manager's special. I recently got a 6 lb pork butt for $6. I keep my pantry organized. Before I go shopping, I check and see what I have and what I'm low on. I only buy what I'm low on. I have a membership card for every grocery store I go to. I also check the mail flyers for sales and coupons. I buy store brand of the pantry staples. I spend around $200 a month for one person on groceries in a HCOL area. More on reddit.com

How do you save money on groceries without sacrificing quality?
A few general tips: Look up guides to seasonal produce and plan your menus around peak season discounts. Note the situations where you break your food budget, such as feeling tired after a hard day, and plan easy meals that you can serve in a couple of minutes instead of delivery or fast food. Survey the ethnic markets in your neighborhood. They often have the best prices on produce, and it may save your budget to learn that style of cooking. Could offer more specific tips if you follow up with more about your situation. More on reddit.com

Any tips? I found the app Ibotta which sometimes helps. Does anybody use any other apps or methods to keep their food budget down?

Store apps usually have digital coupons and sometimes their own rebates. Kroger mails out loyalty coupons monthly and quarterly, if you have your address on your account. Might vary by location. A price book helps keep track of good prices and prices per unit so you know if something is a good price. I use the app “Is That A Good Price.” Fetch Rewards does rebates on your receipts. You don’t have to choose the offers like ibotta, it finds them automatically. Brandclub is great if you shop at Walmart or Target. It’s a little confusing and takes some effort to learn, but the payouts can be higher than ibotta. Flipp is an app that compares sale ads across different stores. Check to see if you have any food sharing apps that work in your area. Olio, Flashfood, and Too Good To Go are a few. Coupon pairing blogs and apps can help find deals to pair with coupons and rebates. I like Krazy Coupon Lady. Different blogs might focus on different stores. CVS couponing is a particularly popular topic. You can also find YouTube channels that focus on deal pairing. They often get into extreme couponing, so don’t get caught up if that’s not what you’re into. I just started using Mealime for meal planning. I really like it so far. The recipes are simple and it makes a shopping list for you. The free version is great. Supercook gives you recipe ideas based on what food you have on hand. Takes a bit of time to add in your food, but it’s totally worth the effort.

95% of the things I buy are things that are on sale. It's satisfying to watch the register chip away $40 off of savings. I don't shop for recipes. I buy things on sale and figure out what I can make with it, and it's honestly made me a better cook. Or if I know I can get a better deal elsewhere, I usually go to Costco to get the better price per unit.
