r/Frugal on Reddit: What's the best way to save on groceries?
March 23, 2024 -
I'll be moving out soon, and really want to save money wherever possible, especially on groceries, so that I can buy a car.
What are the best ways to save? Buying in bulk? Dollar store? Or a service like hello fresh?
I'm not sure what would be best.

Any tips? I found the app Ibotta which sometimes helps. Does anybody use any other apps or methods to keep their food budget down?

Store apps usually have digital coupons and sometimes their own rebates. Kroger mails out loyalty coupons monthly and quarterly, if you have your address on your account. Might vary by location. A price book helps keep track of good prices and prices per unit so you know if something is a good price. I use the app “Is That A Good Price.” Fetch Rewards does rebates on your receipts. You don’t have to choose the offers like ibotta, it finds them automatically. Brandclub is great if you shop at Walmart or Target. It’s a little confusing and takes some effort to learn, but the payouts can be higher than ibotta. Flipp is an app that compares sale ads across different stores. Check to see if you have any food sharing apps that work in your area. Olio, Flashfood, and Too Good To Go are a few. Coupon pairing blogs and apps can help find deals to pair with coupons and rebates. I like Krazy Coupon Lady. Different blogs might focus on different stores. CVS couponing is a particularly popular topic. You can also find YouTube channels that focus on deal pairing. They often get into extreme couponing, so don’t get caught up if that’s not what you’re into. I just started using Mealime for meal planning. I really like it so far. The recipes are simple and it makes a shopping list for you. The free version is great. Supercook gives you recipe ideas based on what food you have on hand. Takes a bit of time to add in your food, but it’s totally worth the effort.

95% of the things I buy are things that are on sale. It's satisfying to watch the register chip away $40 off of savings. I don't shop for recipes. I buy things on sale and figure out what I can make with it, and it's honestly made me a better cook. Or if I know I can get a better deal elsewhere, I usually go to Costco to get the better price per unit.

May 16, 2025 - While manually logging receipts in a spreadsheet isn’t very efficient, it helps me find patterns in what I buy and how much I spend.
