[US] Vice (2018) - The story of Dick Cheney, an unassuming bureaucratic Washington insider, who quietly wielded immense power as Vice President to George W. Bush, reshaping the country and the globe in ways that we still feel today.
As a huge history nerd, especially presidential history, this was honestly one of the most disappointing movies I’ve ever seen. In part due to how good Adam Mckay’s dramatic directorial debut with The Big Short was, but mostly due to the complete lack of subtlety in any of the scenes. Such a narrow minded black and white view where Cheney is evil incarnate and Bush is this bumbling idiot being manipulated. (Which in a sense exonerates Bush from his many awful decisions) It’s basically a 2000s Huffington Post political cartoon stretched over 2 hours long. No issue, including Iraq, is ever really gone into depth. There’s no real conflict or depth into any of the characters. No real insightful social commentary except “this guys to blame for all our current problems” I don’t recommend this one for anyone who actually is interested in history More on reddit.com

When he finally does look at us, it’s to deliver a self-pitying lecture about how he saved the country and maybe even the world, even as the rest of the movie has hammered home that he damned it instead, even if he’ll be dead long before the consequences come home to roost.
