Confused about Schedule 40 PVC pipe sizes vs needed flow rate (site drainage).
Why do I see so many drainage projects on people’s homes that use 4” piping for downspouts and catch basins, leading to 4” piping in the ground, instead of 3” pipes, or even less? Cost, convenience. Common drain pipe and pipe accessories start at 4". This is sufficient for almost all residential purposes and makes it simple to just use the same pipe and fittings for everything. Drains are not pressurized so Schedule 40 is way overkill unless it is a shallow line and you need to drive trucks over it. If you'd rather spend $40 for a 10ft stick of 3" SCH 40 PVC instead of $20 for a 10ft stick of 4" ADS Triplewall then go for it. More on reddit.com
