Im wondering if i should buy the pan and everything separate? Im worried about buying this kit, then having to buy the 1/2 board to go on walls, and not using the big roll of thin covering (i have the walls down to studs).

You’re better off buying kerdi board. The membrane needs to be bonded and then troweled to get excess thin set out. If you ever wall papered, it’s 5x worse than that. With the board you just screw in with washer backing and seal over the screws with small pieces of membrane. You can also just used cement or hardi backer board. That said, you can cut kerdi with wall board knife. It’s lined so I lay it on plywood and just cut free hand. Very easy. I’ve used the shower pan to avoid fabricating a pan. Sure if you’re a pro it’s a days work, but for DIY the pan is just cut and go. They tell you wall first then pan, but I reverse it. I want the walls to overhang the pan and I double seal the joints. First with caulking then with membrane. You just need to cover pan membrane while working on walls as you can scuf the membrane up. Just use a painters drop cloth. Once everything is up, I tile the pan and the cover it with scrap wallboard or something. Then tile the walls. I wait to grout everything till the end as loose thinset will find it’s way to shower pan tile. OBTW, you need the roll of 5” membrane to seal all joints…wall to pan, wall to wall and screws. It’s expensive so measure what you need I just finished a small shower (54x45) and used a whole roll. About 8” left at end.

I just went online and order stuff. Typically from Lowe’s due to price. They also carry some of the products if you miscalculate or forget something. If your talking the finish drain it’s separate from the pvc or abs insert. It’s made to seat at whatever depth your floor tile is at. Bond the flange to the pan, and they provide a membrane ring to seal over it. When you tile the pan your tile is cut around the drain offet like 1/8” and you set the drain just below or flush to tile. If your not a tile pro I recommend square mosaic for floor. It conforms to the pan slope easier and makes drain cut out more straight forward. You can cut the mosaic mesh and give yourself some small tile squares to cut. As a note, they sell pans with offset drains. You may be able to look at the size they offer and find one that would fit or could be cut to your existing drain. If I recall, the make a 60” length with offset drain but I think the drain is set back 10” from edge.

January 31, 2024 - Hi, I plan on building a shower and will be using the Schluter shower pan kit. The kit says it is 36" wide by 60" long. So, for width of wall I'm thinking I need the wall to be 36" + 1 1/2" for cement board/drywall + 4 1/2" for width of Kerdi curb.
