Just diagnosed with secondary hypothyroidism..anyone else?

What are your labs? I believe initially I was diagnosed with this, as my TSH was normal, but somewhere along the way that diagnosis got changed.

secondary hypothyroidism diagnosis! anyone experience some of these symptoms?

I have secondary/central hypothyroidism. Congratulations on a good endocrinologist! That's a great start.

I was also originally started on 50mcg, and while it helped, I wound up eventually going up to 100mcg.

Your symptoms could definitely be related to the lack of t4 in your system. Hopefully the meds will help resolve some of them quickly. (I remember feeling like my whole head was swollen.)

You could also be suffering from deficiencies. People with hypothyroidism tend to have trouble metabolizing and absorbing nutrients. Make sure your ferritin is well above 30. (Aim for 100) and your vitamin D is at the top of normal range.

Hopefully, your doctor also double checked ACTH and cortisol. Those could be low for us, and we need to be careful with levothyroxine if that's the case. (Edit: I see that was checked. Since it was a little low, keep an eye on that. Make sure to know the signs of an adrenal crisis just in case.)

FINALLY A DIAGNOSIS!! Central Hypothyroidism.
Just curious, has your doctor tested your ACTH and cortisol? I had similar thyroid levels (and thankfully, also a doctor who was willing to treat me - now I've got my life back!). My cortisol and ACTH are likewise unexpectedly off. Good luck to you! Hope you feel better soon :) More on reddit.com

Anyone have experience with Central (Secondary) Hypothyroidism? I just got my diagnosis.
Yes, I have Central Hypothyroidism after a Pituitary tumor removal. I've had this condition for over 14 1/2 years. When correcting the Central Hypothyroidism, your fT3 and fT4 levels are what should be looked at. In my case, my TSH is non-existent, so it's useless for determining how my thyroid meds are working. With Central Hypothyroidism, your fT3 and fT4 levels must be in the UPPER HALF of the range. Just being in range isn't good enough and you will still be Hypothyroid. If both fT3 and fT4 are low, you need to replace with Synthroid(Levothyroxine), which replaces fT4 and Cytomel(Liothyronine), which replaces fT3. Best Wishes! More on reddit.com

Central Hypothyroidism - Endocrinology Advisor
August 13, 2025 - Hypothyroidism may be defined as primary, secondary, or tertiary hypothyroidism. Primary hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. Lack of iodine and Hashimoto thyroiditis are the 2 main causes of primary hypothyroidism.1 Secondary and tertiary hypothyroidism are also known as central hypothyroidism (CeH).

February 18, 2024 - The less commonly seen secondary or central hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland functions normally; however, hypothyroidism results from the abnormal pituitary gland or hypothalamus function. Autoimmune thyroiditis and iodine deficiency are the most common causes of the disease.

The normal thyroid cells are overrun by white blood cells and scar tissue. Another cause may be treatment for an overactive thyroid gland. That may include radioactive iodine therapy or surgery. Hypothyroidism may also develop shortly after pregnancy. A condition called secondary hypothyroidism can also sometimes happen.

Secondary hypothyroidism, also called central hypothyroidism, is where the pituitary behaves abnormally and produces inadequate TSH, resulting in under-stimulation of the thyroid gland and insufficient thyroid hormones. TSH, T3 and T4 will all be low. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the developed world.

The hypothalamus releases a hormone called thyrotropin (TRH), which sends a signal to the pituitary to release thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). In turn, TSH sends a signal to the thyroid to release thyroid hormones (T4 and T3). If any of these hormone signals are interrupted, a defect in thyroid hormone production will result in a deficiency of thyroid hormone causing secondary hypothyroidism.
