Shoutout to MI Secretary of State
Went to the S.O.S. Today. They wouldn’t let us in because it wasn’t our scheduled time and said it cuts down wait time.
Why do I have to visit a Secretary of State office in person?
While most transactions can be completed online, by mail, and at self-service stations, some still must be completed in person at a Secretary of State office, including:
- Applying for a first-time standard or enhanced driver’s license or ID
- Converting a license or ID to a REAL ID-compliant credential
- Correcting a name, gender designation, commercial endorsement or designation, or other information
- Some title transactions
- Registering a vehicle for the first time
- Every 12 years to renew credential, take a new photo, and complete a vision test (drivers only)
- To renew your license or ID in person ahead of your 21st birthday (any time up to six months ahead of your 21st birthday).
Should an appointment at a Secretary of State office to enroll my child in driver's education be scheduled under my name or my child's name?
Please schedule the office visit in your child's name as they are the resident who will receive service. You can use your own email address and phone number when scheduling. This will ensure the confirmation email and any follow-up messages are sent to your device.
Do I need to schedule an office visit to go to a Secretary of State office?
We strongly recommend scheduling a visit, so you can be served on time and be back on your way in about 20 minutes. When you schedule a visit, the system will walk you through everything you need to bring with you for your transaction, helping you to avoid having to make a return visit. If you arrive without having scheduled ahead, staff will find you the next available time slot, which may be later in the day or the next business day.
Visits may be scheduled up to six months in advance. To schedule your visit, visit Online Services or call 888-SOS-MICH (888-767-6424).
TIP: Scheduling your visit is the best way to minimize your time in the office.
