r/pihole on Reddit: Chrome "Secure DNS" feature
September 2, 2020 -

Hi,

I have a question regarding the "Secure DNS" feature in Chrome (which I just read has become available on Android https://9to5google.com/2020/09/02/chrome-secure-dns-android/)

I read in previous reddit posts here that I should disable Secure DNS as it implements DoH, which will circumvent my Pi-Hole. However, I also saw tutorials from Pi-Hole's own site on how to setup DNS over HTTPS. I'm not a network-whiz, so a bit confused on what the difference between the two is? I'm using the DoH feature in Chrome uses Google's 8.8.8.8 server, which would have privacy concerns, whereas using Cloudflare on Pi-Hole's site would mitigate that to a certain extent. However, I saw that Chrome allows you to set a custom address for the Secure DNS feature.

So I guess my question is, should I continue to disable Secure DNS on chrome or turn it on and set the address to my Pi-Hole? For context, I don't use Cloudlfare, as I have an eero system and I use their paid service which I believe does DoT. Additionally, I use PiVPN on all my devices outside of my home network to make sure I'm using Pi-Hole all the time.

Thanks for humoring a newbie!
