Seestar S50 Image Processing - Getting Started With Imaging - Stargazers Lounge
November 29, 2025 - No matter how hard I try I just cant seem to grasp how to process images from the Seestar S50. All the tutorials seem to complicate or maybe it's just me. Looks like I will have to stick with images straight from the scope.😞

October 7, 2023 - Briefly, I'll explain that the new ZWO Seestar S50 delivers two kinds of output files: 1) A high-resolution .jpeg delivered to the controlling smartphone, and maybe onwards via the Cloud to your image processing PC. All so simple a child could do it. An increase in the contrast brings out more de...

Thinking about a SeeStar S50 - questions about post processing
The RAW images coming out of S50 are different from what you're used to in "regular" photography. They need to be stacked and "stretched" to reveal the object in full glory. The most common free tool is called Siril. You can see the process and the final result here . And he shares the raw files so you can try it yourself too. IMHO, the stuff that is processed in the Seestar app and other mobile apps doesn't hold a candle to what can be produced using the more "conventional" processing tools. More on reddit.com

Post Processing Advice
There's a Facebook group for Siril. There's also an discord with lots of videos. There are videos online everywhere, specifically ones by Chris Gray that tell you how to stack and edit specifically Seestar images with Siril. My advice, go to Facebook for Seestar S50 stuff...Reddit doesn't have much info. More on reddit.com

r/seestar on Reddit: Thinking about a SeeStar S50 - questions about post processing
November 11, 2025 -

I've been doing a little bit of "Landscape Astro" photography for the last 12 months. My rig includes a Sony A7II and Viltrox 16mm F1.8 lens (no tracking mount). To produce better images, this requires a lot of post processing.

I have been thinking of a SeeStar S50 as the next step up into the hobby, and to look deeper into our skies.

While I see a lot of images directly out of the camera/app which are pretty good, I am curious to understand how much better images can be made in external apps, processing RAW files.

Also, what external apps are people using? For my current Landscape Astro process flow, I use Sequator and Photoshop.

Thanks

What is the best way to do post-processing of Seestar images? Use the stacked image it creates? Or use the individual subs? (I'm guessing the latter).

Also, which is the best software to use. I have Siril and also DSS, though DSS is proving difficult to learn.

I'm new to photo processing...wish there a place to learn the ins and outs of what functions to use and when while using software. For example, you can surmise by my screen name I am a bowler and also a golfer...so when presented with a particular shot while golfing I know what to do and how...but with photo-processing, I'm a bit lost.

I've done some trial and error but want to get better results.

Any advice is appreciated. Thank you in advance and Clear Skies!

The script that covers Seestar needs is named Seestar_Preprocessing. Click on it and wait until it is complete. The stacked image is normally located next to your lights folder and the newly created process folder. It should be named according to the object photographed and the number of images stacked like for example: NGC_2175_268x20sec_T7°C_2024-03-07.fit.

r/seestar on Reddit: Best software to use with s50 raw data?
November 9, 2025 -

Hey guys

So I got the s50 and have been trying to figure out the best way to process images. I have Siril and used it to split the background and main subject with my photo of orion and Andromeda but they just seem to be lacking. I'm happy with the photos, but I have seen much better versions line.

Additionally, Siril didn't do an amazing job, where I ended up following a guide online (linked in this thread) using just lights and by the end, my photo was essentially pure white and looked ridiculous.

Does anyone have advice on what tools are best?
