Standalone, the outfit looks good, you pull it all off really well. That said, technically the “rules” for formal are pretty cut and dry, and this is 100% not formal. I’d say it’s not even semi formal. If the host or whatever doesn’t care, then great, more power to you. But I’ve seen people be real assholes about sticking to dress code, just as a heads up if you try to wear this to another formal event. Answer from anm3910 on reddit.com

November 11, 2023 - Generally speaking formal is suit with tie or tux, semi-formal is suit with no tie. ... Because you’re dealing with terms that are by definition pretty traditional and up their own ass.

I have a wedding to go to this Friday and this is the first time I think I attended a semi-formal wedding. I've always worn suits when attending one as they were always formal. This one is the wedding of a close friend of mine, but it feels weird to ask her what I should wear lol.

The wedding is going to be at a hotel/resort in the evening around 5 so I don't know if that should affect the type of attire I wear.

I was asked to go to a semi-formal with the girl I'm seeing, and the word 'semi' is throwing me off. I'm guessing that wearing a suit w/o a tie or something is still too much. Help?

[Edit] - Yes, I agree, the term makes no sense and seems to be throwing everyone off.

Semi-Formal - A type of dinner/party/social for college fraternities, sororities or other campus groups to come together and celebrate a successful year. No, not a house-party. Usually it's hosted at a banquet hall, or other nice area.

I'm attending a dinner/awards ceremony and they sent the dress code in the picture. This will be my first ever formal dinner, so I'm trying to interpret the dress code.

I'm not too keen on the tuxedo look, and I would prefer to dress down while keeping to the dress code.

Would I be able to get away with a semi-formal outfit? Thanks a lot.

So I'm going to a semi-final event for New Years.

I keep getting conflicting information.

Is a suit required? I have seen sites that say a suit is the bare minimum while others say you just need a matching jacket while other say it means dress shirt with a cover.

Would a waistcoat be semi formal or only if worn as part of a suit?

Because I have blazers and jackets that fit me fine, but no full suits that still fit me and I doubt I have the time to get one.

I have two options being that I could either wear

  1. A perfectly tailored, notch (I know...) lapel black suit (same fabric as coat) with a black tie, matching black vest, a pleated studded dress shirt, and black oxfords.

  2. An unaltered rental tuxedo with a black vest, tie, pleated shirt, and shined tuxedo shoes.

Can I break some of semi-formal rules if it is a loose event in order to have everything that I am wearing tailored to my body? The tuxedo is going to be hard to find a perfect match for it because I am a small and tall guy.

Pants look baggy, sleeves are too long, I think the colours are good but I’m not a fan of the plaid patterned shirt, for shirts I think you should typically either stick to solid colours or stripes (white shirts go with everything btw) ... I have a Dinner Dance coming up and I am confused by the dress code. It says “Semi-formal to Formal (dresses and suits)” This will be my first time going to an event like this outside of highschool dances. Would dress pants with a button down be appropriate do you think or should I go full out with a suit. I don’t want to be overdressed but also don’t want to be turned away for being underdressed. Probably overthinking it but would like an outside opinion

I'm in the process of revamping my wardrobe right now, and something that I'd like to build is a versatile clothing system that I can take with me on a number of business trips in the future.

Ideally, it would:

  • Be adaptable to a number of different climates (I won't really be outdoors or in the wilderness much since I'll be in cities most of the time, but should be ready for things like cold weather or rain)

  • Be able to be slightly dressy when needed (the most formal I'll ever need to be is business/smart casual, for meetings or events)

  • Breathable! (while I do get cold easily, I also sweat a lot)

Would love to hear suggestions from experienced onebaggers here. Thanks!

Can only speak for myself. But when I travel I will go to restaurants that need business casual/modern “going out dress” and Michelin spots that might need to be a bit nicer still. Nothing crazy though. So I bring a button shirt that can cover those scenarios. Just to set the scene for you on where I am coming from. What you like will depend on your body type and fit style. I like shirts I can wear more than once to cut down on number I bring. Western Rise has a great merino option that is fine for dinner out and leans more casual. Bluffworks and Wool and Prince have more classic dress shirts. Pick one pattern you like, or two. For pants, I’ve not done a written review yet but my newest favorite are Western Rise Evolutions. It’s their lightest fabric but I’ve not been cold in them as regular pants. I live in NYC. I also had them tailored as I’m short but also like more of a taper. Once the way you need, amazing pants and fabric. Or if you prefer jeans when you travel, check Aviator Travel jeans. Awesome as well. Lastly, another favorite for city trips are Bluffworks ascender 5 pockets. All three of these double as around town with sneakers or dressed for a night out with brogues. Bring just one or one of each to alternate. For a thicker option, Western Rise diversions can also be worn well with shoes and a button shirt. With the right colors you can mix and match those indefinitely. Merino tshirts - I like Aviator. My western rise are good too, those are a blend. Socks - Darn Tough works as day or night and shoes socks with their lifestyle versions. If you do want a sweater, Quince has amazing prices on cashmere. Uniqlo for a bit more if you need a store. Let me know if you have other questions. You’ll get a lot of good, differing opinions here and hopefully this at least gives you some directional input in your search even if they aren’t all for you.

Start by picking a color palette. Easiest is always black white tan navy. One pair dress shoe one pair comfortable shoe (there are a few active shoes that still look nice.) One pair dress slacks one pair dressy denim. 1-2 dress shirts (and undershirts) depending how often you need to wear business casual. 2-3 dressy tees. 1 nice sweater. 1 smart coat (imo the most important since it has to be good in all temps, precipitation and social settings. Package of black socks and underwear of your choice. You can always pick up a hat and gloves in your city if you find yourself in need

April 11, 2022 -

My husband and I are guests at my cousins wedding in June and we got the invite today and it says semi formal attire. My husband is a farmer and I WFH and wear leggings and t shirts daily. We both were going to buy a new outfit for this wedding since we really don’t have any nice clothes but I’m unsure of what semi formal is exactly since we are causal dress people lol. Can someone let me know what is considered semi formal for both men and women for a wedding? I just want to make sure I get us both outfits that are appropriate for the wedding. Thanks! ☺️
