Ahrefs & Semrush are the two “top dogs” of SEO tools as far as research is concerned.

Are there other tools that do a comparable job but actually free? (Some might be free but have limitations)

What are free tools to use that do a great job for SEO research where paying is not necessary?

But I also hear paying for Ahrefs or Semrush is worth it because of their value and “you get what you pay for” -which makes sense.

Here are some solid free ones that actually help: Google Search Console - gives u direct data from google about ur site performance Ubersuggest (free version) - keyword research n basic competitor analysis Ahrefs Webmaster Tools - limited but good for checking backlinks n site health answerthepublic - great for content ideas n understanding what ppl search for But honestly for link building specifically, most free tools are pretty trash. They usually just give u a list of random sites or automate spammy forum posting which can hurt ur rankings. What actually works is: getting quoted in legit news sites/blogs (through HARO etc) building real relationships w bloggers in ur niche creating link-worthy content If ur looking to automate reporter outreach specifically, check out backlinker ai (full disclosure - i built it). But even without tools, manual outreach to quality sites will get u way better results than those "1000 free backlinks" tools that just spam links everywhere lmk if u need any other specific recommendations! happy to share what ive learned from years of trial n error in this space

I noticed some newer tools are getting pretty good at analyzing on-page issues and technical SEO factors in seconds. Curious what others here are using in 2025 - especially for quick checks or client reports.

Do you stick to classics like Ahrefs, Semrush, or Screaming Frog, or are there any newer tools that impressed you lately?

(If anyone’s curious, I can share the one I recently tried that gives full SEO scores for free - not dropping a link since I know promo links aren’t allowed here.)

I still end up using Ahrefs free tools and Neil Patel’s Ubersuggest for quick checks, mostly out of habit. But lately I’ve been impressed by some newer ones like SEOlyzer and Sitechecker, which give fast, no-login audits with pretty clean reports. They’re not as deep as Semrush or Screaming Frog, but for quick client previews or a surface scan, they save a lot of time. I kinda like tools that don’t need me to connect Google Search Console or wait for a crawl — just paste the URL and boom, instant results.

For quick checks, I still find Ubersuggest pretty handy, especially for fast on-page audits and keyword ideas without logging in. But lately, I’ve been liking Sitechecker and Seobility too. They give clean, easy-to-read reports that are great for quick client overviews. Screaming Frog is still a go-to for deep dives, but for speed and simplicity, some of these newer tools are stepping up.

For tracking how inbound traffic converts to leads: Hotjar + Hubspot I don't actually use Google Analytics much. Partly because 4 is confusing and partly because GSC is a simpler way to see what terms are driving inbound traffic.

SEMrush, Google Analytics, Google Search Console, Screaming Frog and AnswerThePublic are all important for SEO. However in 2024 content is king—focus on creating content that aligns with user intent.

Use Google Search Console, it's free and Ahrefs pulls a lot of information from it. It's harder to use initially because things are all over the place but you get the hang of it and it's quite powerful

Instead of free, there are affordable ones. I can't afford Semrush and Ahrefs. I was lucky to have full access at a company I worked at. To be honest, I don't need a platform that's so comprehensive. This post helped me find 2 tools that I use now. LowFruits and SEOBoost. It comes to around $20 per month each. Still a fraction of the cost. I was already using AIOSEO (basic). To optimize for AI engines, I'm using GPTrends (the free version). I've tried out a few tools. This one stuck. My total bill for all the tools is approx $45 per month. Totally worth it.

For site audits: Screaming Frog. Free for under 100 page website. Best tool out there IMO. For keyword research. Ahrefs and Semrush have free but limited tools, still worth using those! Also using some of the chrome extensions available and just checking the top 3 organic search results should point you in the right direction. Honestly the Google SERP is the best tool, and with AI tools now it's getting easy to analyze them, the KWs used, page structure etc. See what ranks, study their page structure and KWs etc, look at their sitemaps and site structure. That's going to be your best foundation.

I am shocked by many of the suggestions here. If I was doing SEO with $480 per year, exactly $0 would go towards tools. My take: You do not need tools to do SEO. Especially not paid tools. Use Google Search Console. It is free and already gives you a lot of data. The free version of ScramingFrog SEO Crawler is good enough for small websites. But unless you constantly change your website, you will rarely need it. Only if you absolutely need information that you cannot get from free tools or if there is a workflow that you wish to automate/improve, then you should think about buying a paid tool. optimize our website (wix) and google business profile Focus on the Google Business Profile. You are much more likely to see results quickly. Especially if you have no background in SEO. The most important things you will need is: Filled out profile Good reviews from happy customers Good pictures we want to do some print advertising around town That is exactly what to do for this kind of business. This + other forms of marketing/advertising + Local SEO are the way to go. Traditional SEO is unlikely to drive you significant traffic in the first 12 months. Another piece of advice: Put your target keywords into Google and see who is ranking. Many will be directories. Try to get on there!

Im a software dev thats currently digging into programmatic SEO. I created a free tool called websiteleaderboard(dot)com (<- trying to respect rule #2 there). I built it over the past week or so, so it is still very rough around the edges!

My site ranks bunch of websites by their google page speed insights as kind of just a fun little leaderboard thing but the bigger picture goal is to provide a free suite of tools to help folks improve seo posture. Right now i pull in data from google search console, similar web, ahrefs, and built with and provide that to users for free.

Eventually, i plan to incorporate more stuff here around like a "my website" dashboard where we centralize data from other tools such as google analytics, stripe, etc.

Like i mentioned before, I am pretty new to the seo thing so if anyone has cool ideas, favorite tools they are currently using or things that are super annoying/difficult to do right now, I would love to hear it and build it in!

Interesting, just wondering how this works with PageSpeed Insights given that one minute I can go check and get a 100% Performance score, then go back an hour later and get 80-something, it's wildly up and down when checked during a 24-hr period. Debugbear seems to produce much more consistent results. Also, most of the "leaders" on the page are super simple example pages, so I don't get what the value of that comparison is.
