The Department of Labor reported the unemployment rate decreased 0.4 percentage point to 4.8 in September. Nonfarm jobs increased by 194,000 in September, lower than expectations and below last month’s payroll gain of 366,000 jobs.

December 21, 2024 - The biggest declines occurred in government jobs, which lost 123,000. Private payrolls gained 317,000, with Leisure & Hospitality, the sector most heavily hit by the pandemic, gained just 74,000.

The October jobs report confirms a common truth: analysts should not judge the economy on one month’s numbers. In September, economic growth slowed considerably below the pace observed in the early months of 2021. Job growth was sluggish in many industries.
