Ethernet VS Serial Communication
When you say "serial," are you talking about RS-232? After all, USB is high-speed serial (Universal Serial Bus).
Now, if you're talking about the 115,200 baud max for RS-232, two reasons: 1) the resonation frequency of quartz (~3.6Hz), and 2) the minimum numbers of a programmable divider (2) and the UART itself (16).
Obviously, we have gotten serial to go much faster since then (40 Gbps throughput via Thunderbolt 3), but we've done that by leaving the RS-232 standard behind.

You will most likely need the OEM APC to USB cable. The connecter that they use is actually an RJ-50.
