Ethernet VS Serial Communication

When you say "serial," are you talking about RS-232? After all, USB is high-speed serial (Universal Serial Bus).

Now, if you're talking about the 115,200 baud max for RS-232, two reasons: 1) the resonation frequency of quartz (~3.6Hz), and 2) the minimum numbers of a programmable divider (2) and the UART itself (16).

Obviously, we have gotten serial to go much faster since then (40 Gbps throughput via Thunderbolt 3), but we've done that by leaving the RS-232 standard behind.

Possible to use VGA port as serial port?
VGA is nowhere near RS-232. The closest thing in a VGA port is the I2 C lines for reading the monitor's specs when you plug it in. More on reddit.com

July 24, 2003 - Straight-through serial cables are used to connect unlike devices (DTE to DCE). A straight-through cable is just what it sounds like—each pin on one connector connects to the corresponding pin on the other. On a DB25-to-DB25 or DB9-to-DB9 cable, this means that each pin on one connector connects to the same pin number on the other.

January 10, 2019 - The V.35 crossover interface is used to connect DTE-DTE and DCE-DCE nodes. It also provides enhanced data rate as high as 64 kbps, by providing 34-34 pin configurations at both transmitter and receiver ends. This particular medium is a mixture of RS-232 and RS-449 standards. Its successors in RS-232 and RS-449 standard domains include V.28 and V.11, respectively. Greater distances can be achieved with a slower data rate and shielded CATx cable (see RJ45 serial adapters). Serial COM ports have been largely replaced by smaller, faster USB-A and USB-C ports on desktop PCs, laptops and peripherals. Computer peripherals such as printers have also adopted the USB interface or gone wireless. However, some network switches, routers and serial devices still use a serial interface, including lab equipment, barcode readers, industrial controllers and data gathering sensors. To connect a legacy serial device with a RS232, RS485 or RS422 port to a modern computer, you will need a serial to USB adapter.
