March 20, 2026 - A serial cable or RS-232 cable is a cable used to transfer information between two devices using a serial communication protocol. The form of connectors depends on the particular serial port used. A cable wired for connecting two DTEs directly is known as a null modem cable.

Serial port - Wikipedia
May 1, 2026 - The individual signals on a serial port are unidirectional and when connecting two devices, the outputs of one device must be connected to the inputs of the other. Devices are divided into two categories: data terminal equipment (DTE) and data circuit-terminating equipment (DCE). A line that is an output on a DTE device is an input on a DCE device and vice versa, so a DCE device can be connected to a DTE device with a straight-wired cable, in which each pin on one end goes to the same numbered pin on the other end.

How do you explain serial console connections to younger people who have never heard of a serial connection?
Tell them they have heard of a serial connection, it's just usually surrounded by a U and a B. Serial is nothing more than the communication method of sending 1 bit at a time. More on reddit.com

Nowadays what are the uses of serial ports?
They work. They're the 'simplest' form of communication that almost every chip supports. I would bet even your phone has UART pads broken out. More on reddit.com

What is the use of this cable?
RS-232 Serial port to RJ11 (maybe RJ12). Lots of possible devices such as a 2-line LCD display, scale, barcode scanner, cash drawer, etc. Pretty common in PoS (Point of Sale) systems. More on reddit.com

Question about serial console and RS232 ports.
your post is a bit unclear and lacks a lot detail. Here is a generic set of steps to point you in the right direction set your PC to use the serial port as a console example docs: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Working_with_the_serial_console connect the serial port on the server to the serial port on another PC (the client) on the client PC use screen /dev/ to open the serial port. you should get a shell if done properly. If you have any questions I can help clarify. I work with RS232 everyday More on reddit.com

Figure 1. Transfer of data via serial port · The above picture gives you an idea on how serial data is transferred. Each colored block that is numbered is sent from PC 1 to PC 2. PC 2 will receive the data in the same order it was sent, in other words it will receive data block 1 first and then 2, all the way to block 7. This is a pretty good representation of data flow in a serial cable.

Serial Port and Modem Cables
Connections between a PC and a modem use a modem cable (in which wires go "straight through", pin to pin), whereas connections between two computers use a null modem cable (in which pairs of wires are cross-connected). To complicate matters, different kinds of connectors might be needed on each end. While the DCE port is almost always a female DB25, and the PC port is always supposed to be of male gender, the PC port can take many shapes: DB25, DB9, Din8, RJ45, USB, etc; thus many combinations are possible. Connecting a serial port to an external modem is usually straightforward because all external modems have the same data connector (female DB25) and for every kind of computer that has a serial port, no matter what the connector type, a modem cable should be available (usually from the computer manufacturer).

RS232 Cable and Connectors Explained - Tripp Lite - Eaton
A standard serial port transmits at 115 Kbps. This may be faster than the connected device can handle. Using flow control (RTS and CTS), the device can temporarily stop the flow of data from the computer so it can process the data in its buffer. RS232 cables can be simple parallel wires or twisted pair up to 15 m (50 ft.), and 1,200 m (4,000 ft.) for RS422 and RS485 applications.

Most RS-232 applications only require seven to nine wires, though a DB25 cable with all pins connected can also be used for RS-530 or parallel printer connections if twisted pair cable is used and it is wired correctly. Below is a list of RS-232 signals and their pin assignments. The maximum length of a serial cable depends on a number of factors. These factors include various characteristics of the transmitters and receivers, baud rate, and the capacitance and impedance of the cable. The RS-232 standard requires that a serial port provide signals appropriate for a capacitive load of 2,500 pF (picofarads).

1 week ago - The standard recommends the D-subminiature 25-pin connector up to revision C, and makes it mandatory as of revision D. Most devices only implement a few of the twenty signals specified in the standard, so connectors and cables with fewer pins are sufficient for most connections, more compact, and less expensive. Personal computer manufacturers replaced the DB-25M connector with the smaller DE-9M connector. This connector, with a different pinout (see Serial port pinouts), is prevalent for personal computers and associated devices.
