Okay, I have one of those rare opportunities where a home project can be solved with 3d printing and score a high Spouse Satisfaction Score.
The kitchen desk drawer has forever been a doom box, literally where all sorts of things go to be forgotten about. Way too many pens, screw drivers, hex keys, erasers, random screws, stickers, many pairs of scissors, etc. The child used brute force to close the drawer and it became mechanically stuck. Basically the wooden dividers got stuff jammed under them and the dividers got driven up above the sides of the drawer. I just spent about 20 min fishing all manner of junk out with pens, ruler, and an old library card.
I’m going to rip out the remainder of these dividers and then print out an organization system. I immediately thought of gridfinity, but the drawer is rather shallow. An anyone tell me what a reasonable height for a grid and bins would be? I’m measuring about 41.45mm as the least depth I have in this drawer (to the sides, not to the opening) in spots it goes over 42mm, buts it’s a wodden cabinet about 20 years old, so it’s not surprising.
Is this too shallow a space? I like the idea of gridfinity because it would be important to keep the bins from shifting, but also I want to keep them from popping up. Do you guys thing this is a good implementation? What’s the shallowest you’ve printed bins (including the base grid). Thanks in advance.

I use my desk drawer since I don’t like things on top of my desk. It’s quite difficult to find pens and pencils that are just floating around. I have highlighters and colored pencils still in their original package. There are also miscellaneous bullet journal supplies just floating around. Is there anything on amazon worth checking out? Have you done any DIY method using things around the house? I use old cups to store makeup brushes inside a bathroom cabinet, but I don’t see cups working in this situation.

I reuse packaging from other products wherever they fit. Sometimes plastic trays from cookies or tea boxes work as organizers as long as they're clean. For a shallow drawer, I'd trim the walls of pantry boxes and lay them down like trays. The big side of a cereal box for example would work as a box tray, and you can use masking tape to dry your own dividers and reinforce edges and stuff. Cracker boxes, are also a workable size. If you go this route it'll be as pretty or unsightly as you care for. Tons of ways to make it prettier with stationery, or origami your own boxes if you don't need them super sturdy. Takes some time and practice but a cool skill you do from your desk, and you can customize it to your dimensions. I had a small vanity drawer for make up and stuff, it was one of those acrylic drawer sets. I took the drawers out and tosses the rest of the housing structure to reuse them as trays in my bathroom drawer for different pads and stuff. If you have one to repurpose, that could be a decent size for stationery. Pencil pouches, jewelry organizers, and make up bags that you have no other use for generally fit stationery just fine. I'd use this for the supplies you don't reach for daily, like stamp pads, rubber stamps, decorative elements, grouping stickers and labels. Would me cumbersome to open drawer and deal with zippers just to get a pen or scissors If you're looking to buy trays and stuff, measure the inner depth and clearance of your drawer and check out a ross, marshalls, theft store, discount store near you in the make up, bathroom, and kitchen areas. If you're gonna get new stuff it's usually a nice discounted price, or you might find something that catches your eye to repurpose. Bathroom and vanity organizers tend to be plentiful

Do the original packages fit inside the drawer? If so, leave the markers/etc in their packaging. I het that aesthetics is more important but it's a waste of money to buy storage items you don't need. Don't store markers/pens/etc. in cups. Always store them horizontally to preserve the life span of your writing tools.
