r/Plumbing on Reddit: Sharkbite depth of insertion
June 30, 2023 -

I have a leak on my copper due to electrolysis, and i’ll be putting a piece of pex in to patch it. I have some old Sharkbites laying around from many years ago, so i believe theyre the old generation couplers. My question is, how much shorter do i make this piece of new pex pipe than the bad piece of copper is that i just cut out?

Sharkbite Fittings do NOT (quite) allow specified insertion depth | Plumbing Forums - Professional & DIY Plumbing Forum
February 24, 2022 - Following insertion, the Demo videos clearly show the deburring tool depth mark (on the pipe) aligned at the top of the release collar. According to Sharkbite, their PEX pipe is marked at 1" intervals to allow proper insertion. Again, the demo videos show the pipe (easily) inserted to the 1" mark. At the local Lowe's, I asked the guy in the plumbing department about this. We tried 10 1/2" Sharkbite fittings. All inserted to a 3/4" depth, and no reasonable amount of pressure allowed a deeper insertion.

June 1, 2014 - The only tool I know of is a removal ring to help decompress the innards and allow you to remove the fitting from the pipe. Sharkbite fittings just press onto the pipe until they bottom out, usually 3/4" from the edge of the release ring.
