r/paint on Reddit: Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim cure time?
January 1, 2023 -
For our kitchen cabinets, I used primer + at least 3 coats (4 coats for some doors) with a sprayer, sanding and tacking after each coat, on both sides of the door. The doors look gorgeous, but...
Waited 2 months (!) after painting to let them cure, but the paint is still softer than pine wood. Fingernails dent this paint. Does the paint get any harder?
Everything was done inside, room temperature... I'm so disappointed, this was more than $1000 of paint and many many hours of work.

Emerald urethane is a modified alkyd which naturally has a slow cure time. If I had to guess, you used a dark color, deep base. Those take forever to dry, it could be soft for up to a month. Definitely will be longer because of the 3-4 coats. Definitely over-kill. Next time, stick to 2 coats of finish. If you want to beef it up, do an additional coat of primer rather than finish. I do dozens of cabinet projects a year & have never used that much product on even kitchens with 100+ pieces.

Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim safe to cure in bedroom?
So full cure is 28 days for latex based paints. During this time it will “off gas” VOCs into the air. While technically harmful to the human body the amount of VOC in paint is incredibly small compared to what gets released when you purchase things like a couch, a new car, carpet, etc. it’s 1000-10,000x more VOC released from industrial glues in your new car but you get in and think “oh yeah I love this new car smell” not “this is harmful to my body”. So TL;DR is it bad for your body? Yes. Is it something to worry about? Probably not but that depends on who you are. More on reddit.com
How should Emerald Urethane in satin "feel" to the touch after curing?
I’ve had it take upwards of a month. Longer if there’s a lot of humidity. Full cure on that stuff takes forever. I don’t use it anymore because of that. Too many kids and animals around my house for that long of a cure. More on reddit.com

October 8, 2021 - Emerald Urethane dries quickly but cure is more like an OB product, so around 30 days. Great product once it does cure. I would not topcoat it but I would not choose it for a bookshelf project either. There are products that cure harder, faster, that are plenty enough durable for that application.

April 1, 2021 - I wanted to wait before sharing this post so I could really speak to how the finish cures and wears. This Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel paint is exceptional quality. It really does level out and smooth as it dries! There were brush strokes visible right after I painted them, but they really did disappear! In the past, I chose a semi-gloss finish but this time I chose a satin and I love the velvety finish.
