[Mature Content] r/electronic_cigarette on Reddit: [Review] Shift Batch 2 (Ulton)
December 9, 2018 -

Hello ladies and gents! Today, we have a look at the teeny tiny Shift Batch 2 (Ulton), which 2fdeal was kind enough to send to me for the purpose of this review:

Shift Batch 2 (Ulton)

Hard facts

  • Measurements (without drip tip and 510) 22*16mm, however the actual chamber has a height of 10 (!) mm

  • Build deck virtually a standard two-post build deck, leads are secured via the heads of flathead screws, both posts come with two holes for your leads, so it doesn’t matter which way you wrap your coil, you can always go belly up/down

  • Airflow pretty standard one-sided airflow, ranging from fairly restricted to loose MTL

  • Something noteworthy about the package goodie bag? comes with a stainless steel cap as well as a clear PC cap (thank you so fucking much!)

  • Anything else? nope

  • price right now, this goes for 16.99$

My first thought when I looked at the Shift Batch 2: ballsy.

Easily one of the slammiest caps I’ve ever seen; deducting the drip tip plug-in part we look at freaking 10mm; I have drip tips that are longer than that. The fourth biggest surprise was, that I didn't run into any heat problems despite the slammed cap.

My second thought when I looked at the Shift Batch 2: dafuq?

What is this build deck? I was getting some serious Artoo vibes. But like the Artoo, in the end, it’s a pretty standard two post deck. One post is in the middle of the juice well, the other post doubles as wall for the juice well. The nice thing about it is the fact that there are two screws on each post, so you can wrap the coil clock- or counterclockwise and can then still choose between belly up and belly down. This is something that should be standard by now IMHO. Noteworthy is also the way that the leads are secured. You do so with the tiny heads of the screws and the positive post’s screws are vertically screwed in. Pretty old-school but considering the restricted flow, the reduced chamber and the slammed deck you are going to either put simple round wire in or maybe single core claptons. Either way, installing coils is easy.

My third thought when I looked at the Shift Batch 2: innovative squonk system -.-

If you’ve read a couple of my reviews, chances are you have seen me bitch about non-standard ways to juice up. Most of the time they just don’t serve any purpose and too often they actually come with downsides. In the case of the Shift Batch 2 the juice enters the chamber via two holes, which are milled into the positive post (= the one in the middle). Normally, because of spit back, I like my juice to be sucked back in, however here we have one-sided airflow and as such, the coil sits off center. Thus, no spit back possible.

Another problem with juice not being sucked back is that too often it leaks out somewhere. Again, not the case here, and this is the second biggest surprise I encountered. I use juice with about 65+ VG and fully closed its viscosity is too high to leak out of the airflow holes. Insane.

Lastly, still enough juice gets sucked back, so the chamber is never flooded.

The airflow control is a pretty simple design. Right above the airflow hole, we have threads milled in, and by turning down or up a screw, we adjust the airflow. Really simple, works like a charm. Now, the third biggest surprise was the quality. The threads in the plastic cap are bonkersly smooth. Seriously, turning the screw you almost feel no friction. Big kudos to Ulton. After the marvelous quality of the Typhoon BTD and the really good execution of the Hellfire Cobra, I was expecting a lot, but the quality of the Shift Batch 2’s plastic cap is something I didn’t think was possible. Fucking impressive.

On the opposite side of the airflow we find another threading. The screw you put in there, acts like a stopper; on the wall of the juice well we have a corresponding hole. You just plug the cap on the base, the screw right into the hole. Now, the top cap won’t move and the air hits the coil perfectly. Just like the airflow control, it’s a really simple design. And again, it works flawlessly.

Speaking of airflow: fully open it’s pretty restricted, fully closed it’s pretty restricted. The difference is noticeable but not huge. Considering that fully closed the Shift Batch 2 is indeed leak-proof, I always used it like this.

No matter how open, though, the draw was always smooth. No whistling, an itty bitty loud, but this is already me trying to find a con.

Last talking point should be flavor. However, if I can’t talk neutrally about it, as always, I shove it down into my

Totally personal take

After having tried the Serpent RDTA and the Aromamizer Surpeme v2 in single coil mode, I thought that one-sided airflow is way too annoying for me. However, the Pixie as well as the Wick’d taught me otherwise.

Similar with plain round wire. If it wasn’t for the Galaxies RDTA, I still would think that such a coil can’t produce satisfying vapor.

Furthermore, thanks to the Galaxies RDTA I also learned that I can enjoy really restricted attys and chain vape the crap out of them (as I'm doing right now with the Shift Batch 2; as of now meaining while writing as well as editing; yes spoiler it's that fucking good).

As such, I was pretty hyped when 2fdeal offered to send me the Shift Batch 2 for the purpose of a review. Eagerly I threw in a simple round wire built way above 1 Ohm and - you've all been waiting for the biggest surprise, right? - BAM. That flavor! So punchy. Very good resolution and a ton of notes. Serious-fucking-ly impressive.

While it wasn’t as hard of punch as the one that the Basic delivers with his fucking walking crane, it still hit me with some serious force. Looking closely at myself in the mirror, I still can see some marks. Seriously, the Shift Batch 2 is a freaking flavor banger.

An upside over the Basic is the vapor, which I found to be impressive. I use tricore clatpons in the Basic and get really anemic clouds out of it. You certainly won’t win any competition with the Shift Batch 2, but the clouds are actually impressively big for such a restricted atty. On top of that, the mouthfeel is way nicer, because the flavor has more texture.

I have to say it’s impressive how fast I can ploy through a squonk bottle with plain round wire, I just chain vape the crap out of the Shift Batch 2 (can't say that often enough).

Adding the smoothness of the draw as well as the facts that it just doesn’t leak no matter what and that there are no heat problems whatsoever, I’m looking at an atty that just offers the full package. So far I vaped on three really good very restricted RDAs: Basic, Galaxies RDTA and the Shift Batch 2. They all are awesome, they all are unique and I love them equally.

One reason for me to do reviews is to spread the word about underappreciated gems. The Shift Batch 2 is one such gem and I seriously hope that at least some people get to appreciate the simple yet effective designed coupled with insane performance still chain vaping

Pros/Cons

Pros Cons
flavor
smooth draw I really had to look for a con, the worst thing I can say is that it’s a bit loud 0o
really low key in terms of required builds and Watts
flavor for days
impossible to oversquonk when fully closed
comes with a plastic cap

Summary

RDA Airiness: sucking on a straw to barn door Smoothness: fasten your seat belts to butter My thoughts summarized with an ASCII Star review Final thoughts
Shift Batch 2 (Ulton) ■□□□□ (fully open) to □□□□□ (fully closed) ■■■■■ <3 ★★★★★ impossible to oversquonk, works insanely well with plain round wire and only 20-25 Watts, rivals the Basic in terms of flavor. 5/5 what fucking else?

Disclaimer

  • The Shift Batch 2 (Ulton) was sent to me for the purpose of this review by 2fdeal.

  • Instead of doing a formal review of the attys themselves I rather rate the experience I have while using them. To be more exact, first I offer hard facts (type of build deck, measurements, etc). After that I give a less formal rundown about what all of that means when actually using the atty and then I finish with a totally personal note that’s based on feelings rather than an objective view.

  • While I base my reviews more on the experience than on technical stuff, that doesn’t mean that they are only subjective. I try to judge attys for what they are, respectively for what I think they are supposed to be. For example, if an atty comes with a shitload of airflow and as such is obviously designed for chucking big clouds, I won’t call it out for not offering top notch flavor. If the flavor is still decent, that’s fine with me.

  • I am pragmatic. In my book, an atty that needs special attention is a badly designed atty. For example, while it doesn't have to excel with every build, it should accommodate a certain range just fine.

  • For each and every atty, I do different builds and put juice through until I feel confident enough to present and review it properly. The amount of coils and juice can vary greatly, as a rule of thumb: the shittier the performance, the more time I spend with an atty.

  • I'm a lazy fuck. And English isn't my first language, so please bear with me.

  • All of my reviews along with my recommendations can be found in this post.

r/ems on Reddit: Ever had those types of shifts where you just end up having a silent cigarette with your partner at 0400, even if you don't smoke?
March 26, 2023 -

Yeah, that's me. I did 32 hours -- picked up the second half of a shift, then a 24. BLS ambulance, but for once there were no "low acuity" calls.

It was non-stop. It just. Never. Stopped. Calls calls calls. We had strokes, seizures, a standoff between a neighborhood and police, and a high speed collision into a building that ejected two people. That last one we transported the lowest acuity patient as the sole BLS provider out of about 6 medics on scene. It was pretty wild.

Anyway, it was after that last call that I just went outside. It was dark and foggy. I hadn't slept since I started, save maybe a power nap in between. I was contemplating my life choices. My partner and I just took drags of shitty cigarettes we found. They weren't even ours, just sitting out somewhere. We said not a word.

You ever have one of those shifts?

EDIT: "The Shift", recounted in no particular order:

  • A seizure that became an arrest (I didn't work the arrest though, I just learned of that later)

  • A COPD lady claiming her concentrator was broken, and that her H-cylinder was busted too. Sure enough, the H-cylinder had a nasty mechanical problem of "out of fucking air". I youtube'd the concentrator and... flipped the ON switch and turned the dial. Miraculously, it worked. We (my BLS crew, the medics, and the residents of this house) then held hands and prayed for our continued protection at the behest of the patient. Yeah, thanks lady, you clearly gave me some kind of gypsy curse the rest of the shift.

  • This bullshit, which in the aftermath I am now pissed off about because my partner was being spineless and apologizing profusely. "I didn't want to call you guys", yeah because I, me, this EMT right here did. Yes, lessons learned and all.

  • The aforementioned riot in the hood, in which our patient accidentally got iced with pepper spray by her friend. While on scene, the entire fucking hood came out to jump this patient, while police rolled in hot with rifles and non-lethal implements. Hood kids were clutching at guns and things. We got the fuck out of there quick.

  • The aforementioned stolen vehicle into a house. 6 people total, two ejected, one traumatic cardiac arrest. No idea if anyone died, I'd be surprised if one TBI or death didn't come out of it. Our patient was fine-ish, just a nasty head wound that you could see to the skull with. Completely CAOx4 as far as I saw though.

  • Stroke-like symptoms, but the lady also vomited all over herself. Not a small amount at all. I am proud to say that I did the most perfect leg sweep ever before she got our bags. Then she shit herself. Thank you medics for transporting that one.

  • Called out for "bloody vomiting". Old boy was struggling and speaking in tongues when we showed up. His sugar was super high, his BP through the roof, all the classic "oh no" symptoms. Medic shows up and says "okay, I actually don't know what's going on. Priority 1". I got to drive our ambulance for the first time though, which was neat, except for the part where I nearly took out a street's worth of side mirrors while I backed out.

There were many more but frankly those were the highlights.
