Most brides are wearing sample dresses and will be altered to fit for their day of, so please try and ignore proportions and how it "fits" when it's clearly clamped or there's an extender. Can you find flowery dresses made of nicer fabric? I've worn several super comfortable polished cotton frocks with floral prints and fit it nicely. Also, wear nice shoes and more expensive jewelry. Another thought-I usually look at the location to determine how fancy I'm expected to be.

If given the choice, people will likely lean towards cocktail dresses and suits than gowns and tuxes, because they are more likely to have that in their closet. That said, they said a gown is appropriate, so some others may be be in gowns so you wouldn’t be out of place. If you’re buying, I’d say get a cocktail dress since you’ll get more use out of it than a gown. If you already have this, get it hemmed and rock it. You’ll look lovely. More on reddit.com
