They should be made from cotton. And flipping them and airing them well is essential because of the risk of getting mold underneath. In Japan they always have a thick woven mat underneath. I’m Australian and bought mine from a site called Japanache https://www.japanache.com.au/contents/en-us/d143_Japanese_Futons.html We got the king size and it was about $1130 AU with postage. It’s handmade in Japan and is 100% cotton. What exactly would you like to know? Our experience is pretty good. Was a bit disappointed that it was 5cms off (the whole way around) from the measurements they gave on the site. But the comfort level is good. We have it directly on hardwood floors but I’d like to get tatami mats once we can afford them. Took us about 3 nights to get used to the difference from a typical mattress. Love the space once it’s folded up. We have 2 of our kids co-sleeping with us and they never complained. We put it out in the sun once a week and it fluffs it up really nice. Im moving into a small room and i won't have a bed, so im thinking of getting a shikibuton in the mean time as well as it will help save space. There is carpet in the room so idk if id need a tatami mat underneath it. Also im used to sleeping on my side would that be bad?
Are they worth it and if so what are some you would recommend for a small room or websites to buy from?
Also, any tips regarding sleeping on shikibutons would be very helpful, like best materials for them to be made from, thank you!

I use one and like it more than a regular mattress - although this has more to do with disliking foam mattresses for me. futonbedsfromjapan.com Sells great ones shipped to Japan, although I also recommend adding a thin foldable tatami mat. I got one from Japan Objects that has worked well.

Update: I have purchased from several places recommended. I'm starting out testing the JLife. Shipping and Delivery was super fast. Ordered the traditional 3 inch with a few covers and a queen tatami. Definitely very comfortable. My dad slept on it for 2 nights and gave it a 10.
I'm in the process of designing one of my rooms. Initially I was going to get the Ikea Vallentuna to use as a daybed that converts to an actual bed when guests come. Well...they discontinued it. So I decided to stick with what I know. I ordered a twin Floyd bed and want to purchase a few Shikibuton mattresses for sleeping. I don't want those made from China Amazon futons either. So I figured I'd ask here to see if any of you floor sleepers have any recommendations. I'm open to cotton or even buckwheat filling. And advice on this is appreciated and I don't have a budget as I know they aren't cheap.
