J-Life All-Natural Japanese Futon – J-Life International
The J-Life Shikifuton is available in two thicknesses: a popular 4-inch option and a more traditional 3-inch. Firm sleep surfaces, like that of a Japanese style floor mattress, help to improve sleep posture, resulting in rewarding sleep and pain-free mornings. The J-Life Shikibuton mattress can also be ordered with a custom removable cover.

What is a Shikibuton? - Soaring Heart Natural Bed Company
The bedroom set, or futon, includes the shikibuton, which is the bed cushion, and the thick quilted bedcover, the kakebuton. In English, the word, "futon," used to describe the futon we all know--a thick mattress made with layers of fiber and other materials (in our case, organic cotton, latex, and wool), which are then tufted together.

Im moving into a small room and i won't have a bed, so im thinking of getting a shikibuton in the mean time as well as it will help save space. There is carpet in the room so idk if id need a tatami mat underneath it. Also im used to sleeping on my side would that be bad?
Are they worth it and if so what are some you would recommend for a small room or websites to buy from?
Also, any tips regarding sleeping on shikibutons would be very helpful, like best materials for them to be made from, thank you!

Hi, I had one and initially loved it, but in the span of two weeks just wasnt feeling rested anymore and got back pain. I otherwise never have back pain. I bought a good one, at a Japanese bedding shop. I am a side sleeper, and thats tougher on a shikibuton or futon type matrasses. If you are a back sleeper its easier to transition. They should be made from cotton. And flipping them and airing them well is essential because of the risk of getting mold underneath. In Japan they always have a thick woven mat underneath. Never just straight to the floor.

I use one and like it more than a regular mattress - although this has more to do with disliking foam mattresses for me. futonbedsfromjapan.com Sells great ones shipped to Japan, although I also recommend adding a thin foldable tatami mat. I got one from Japan Objects that has worked well.
