I'm thinking of getting a shikibuton for me and my girlfriend, but I'm stuck between two options. I can get 2 twin sizes (easier to handle, but more expensive) or 1 queen size (more heavy and bulky, but cheaper).
Is a larger shikibuton worth it if you need to move it around and air it out?

I have a queen sheeeeeekeeeee boooootonnnn. I live alone and in a humid climate. I had to get a bedframe. If I had to move or get another futon in the future I would probably go with a full. I had to roll up my queen and tie it with a rope to move it. It’s heavy as fuck. I was just moving rooms not cleaning it. I’m a very strong woman. However it was easier to move than say a queen sized mattress. Also rolling it is more compact. If you plan to do the traditional cleaning on them and really shake it outside ? Go with the double twins. If you have any doubts that you might not like the floor or there is the possibility of mold those double twins won’t fit on a normal frame. Go with the full sized. Seems like most of us fantasize about Japanese Minimalism until we can’t sleep from numb arms or pressure point pain. I can’t sleep on my futon without a memory foam topper. I have 2 toppers. But cost of toppers plus futon are way less than a gallery quality mattress and I like that I can control the firmness or fluff depending on how many layers I want.

I have a regular mattress but we were looking at a similar issue when we replaced that. We had a king but were also moving and it was super old so we decided to replace it. I ended up getting two twins and putting them on a king frame (just a plain metal bed frame with a plywood platform). It’s a lot better. If we move again it’s going to be a lot easier or even if we just want to move stuff around in the room.

I'm interested in getting a shikibuton mattress but also want to do a trial run before investing tons of money in an authentic one, so looking at some cheap ones on Amazon. I know they aren't authentic and are cheaply made, but has anyone had any positive experiences with them and/or recommendations? I also have minor back problems. My current mattress is no good and am looking for other more minimal solutions other than a new $1000+ mattress.

I use a Fuli and it's been great, zero issues with it. It's 100% cotton and made in japan, so it's probably authentic. I got a twin on sale for like $150, normally they're like $180. I've tried a cheaper one, like $80, and the quality was significantly worse. I would just spend the extra if you can and get something better

I did not purchase that specific type of very minimalist shikibuton mattress but FWIW I did switch back to a foam-core futon mattress again several years ago after experiencing back and neck pain from a regular spring mattress, and I did purchase the Serta brand futon mattress and it arrived rolled up in a large box (queen size), and after moving a regular spring mattress between my last apartment and my current one, I won't be as worried about moving this futon mattress, they are easier to roll up and transport compared to a giant rectangular spring mattress. I could probably even put the futon mattress into a car, the shikibuton type thing you are considering looks even easier. I can say that it definitely took a week or two before my body got used to sleeping on a more flattened surface again, on a more firm flat mattress like a futon, there was a slight adjustment period, that sort of thing, different types of body soreness that went away after getting up in the morning and moving around again, get the circulation flowing, etc. But it is good and my back and neck issues subsided afterwards. Those regular spring mattresses tend to sag in the middle and that puts all sorts of tension on your spine sleeping like that.
