I was tired of not having a place to sit while putting on shoes in the foyer, so I took some IKEA shoe trays and reversed engineered & modified an existing design to allow the trays to dropped in as shelves.
Some design details:
-
used pine and sandeply from HD because I didn’t feel like milling stock. I had poplar I could have milled but didn’t want to invest it in these. Even the tops were from HD as they have large pine panels i could cut down into 2 tops. You REALLY need to sort through the lumber to because the consistency is bad.

Cut a rabbit in the rails to allow the tray to drop in flush. The white pieces in the photo were also bought at HD in the trim section. They were the perfect fit. For the bottom supports I cut a groove(?) on a router table to let them slot in flush to the rails.

I love using these figure 8s to fasten the tops. Used a 5/8” forstner bit to cut a recess in the top rails.
-
Used pocket holes & glue for the main joints. I filled the pocket holes on the side and kinda wished I filled the holes on the rails even tho they will never be seen.

Top has 1” reveal and there is no back (unlike the original). This is probably going against a wall anyway 🤷
