As a web designer with a decade e commerce experience I will tell you this the options are not great. At some point, all transactions need to go through a payment processor and the biggest ones (other than Interac) tend to be mastercard, visa, american express, or paypal. Doing business via interac payments is more complicated than other options. Stripe and Square also exist as payment gateways. The best option is always hosting your own site, but for ease of payment (and financial security), most e-commerce relies on US based sites since financial regulations are heavy and there are not a lot of technical Canadian solutions that fill the gap. Some vendors may be happy to take a payment via interac and then manually fulfill the order, but automating interac is generally a tough option for developers, and interac doesn't have the same protection levels as a credit card processor (which tends to have better recovery options for fraud). I'm trying to replace all my used up products with ones ones from Canadian businesses. I'm happy to make the switch and I've been enjoying supporting local.
However, I noticed that one business I was purchasing from uses Shopify to complete the transaction. I want to support local, but I don't want to indirectly support a business that supports fascism.
Is it worth emailing the company and letting them know that I'm happy to support their business but to ask them to reconsider how they accept payment?

Shopify has always stood for entrepreneurs. It built its company in Canada on the idea that anyone, anywhere, could start and grow a business. It was inspiring. That’s why its sudden shift is so very disappointing. Dismantling DEI programs that supported Black, Indigenous, LGBTQ+ and women entrepreneurs isn’t just a policy change—it’s a huge step backward for those who already face the highest barriers to success.
Equity, diversity, and inclusion aren’t “extras”. They’re what make entrepreneurship more accessible to those who have historically been locked out. When companies pull back, it sends a message: that opportunity is no longer for everyone. For a company that built itself on the idea of empowering entrepreneurs, this choice is hard to justify.
At the same time, Shopify’s stance on trade raises another question: Why step away from the strength and independence that made them successful? Trump’s policies serve American interests, not Canada’s. Canadian companies are strongest when they stand firm in their own value, not when they fall in line with someone else’s agenda.
Shopify was once a leader in championing Canada and Canadian entrepreneurs from all areas of life and backgrounds. This shift raises a tough question—who are they standing for now?
