Hey guys, my name is Sam and I'm from the Dallas area. I have a house built in 2011, and the handle in the shower recently became very stubborn and hard to turn. I had a plumber come check it out, and I got charged $400 for a cartridge replacement...
Does that sound reasonable to you guys? The part is ~$50, and I know there plumbing repairs can be expensive, but this is a bit steep.. I've seen other posts where the job was done for $250-280. Would it be unreasonable to try and push this down?

He should have had that cartridge in the truck. No excuse for not having it, one of the most common valves. I charge 100-200. Depending how far I have to go to fix it.

Did you find the cartridge for that price? If the plumber went and got the cartridge then you were probably also charged for them putting time and effort into that. Plus a company will always upcharge whatever it is they sell you so if you looked it up and it says $50 you won't pay that price unless you go find it yourself

As a plumber the cartridge jobs are pretty annoying because we have to source out the exact part and come back, usually involves a couple visits. If its a Moen cartridge then yah the price is high. I've charged $500 to replace a higher end shower cartridge. Source out the cartridge yourself and have them just install it for a lesser fee. But this price seems par for the course to me.
