need help with ideas for a path in my side yard
We have a pathway on the side of our house that is about 4’ wide and 30’ long. We live in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States and the orientation in the picture is from Northeast to Southwest. The soil is loamy sand. It is a high-traffic area, mostly used by my kids (you can see that a bike tread has worn a puddle into the dirt), but utility workers also need access to it. The area is constantly wet from air conditioner drainage, and water drains through there from the backyard when it rains. Due to the constant traffic and heavy water, grass doesn’t stay for long. I think it needs some sort of path that would help make conditions less slippery for the people who walk here. Would a solution be as simple as just throwing down a bunch of stepping stones, or would that cause problems with the water drainage? At present, I’m interested in hearing all ideas regardless of budget or skill level. More on reddit.com
Cheap walkway ideas?
This section looks pretty level already so that’s great. I’ve seen this type of gravel and stone walkways become really popular recently. And they take like a weekend to finish. walkway More on reddit.com
Outdoor pathway down slope advice needed.
Do you want to be able to roll anything up the hill? Like a wheelbarrow? If so, you may want to reconsider the stair treads idea. Also...do you have a downspout that empties near the top of the hill? If you do, your best first step might be burying corrugated pipe and having it empty near the bottom of the hill. That alone might solve a lot of your washout issues so you could just stick with grass. More on reddit.com

I would like to add some sort of walkway here. It's about 40 feet. My original idea would be to make a stepping stone pathway, with some thing similar to flgstone that's flush with the grass so I can move over it in between the stones. Or is it too large of an area for a stepping stone walkway? Budget is tight on this and would like to do it myself and keep costs minimal.

Use 18 x 30 stepping stones (+/- 500 square inches), minimum. Anything smaller will tend to wobble and look ridiculous. Allow for 4 - 6 inch spaces between the stones. Excavate the area of the path, allowing for an extra 6 - 8 inches outside of the edge of the pavers, and fill with 6 inches of hand tamped sand. The extra sand depth will help drain the surface water since this area appears to be squishy. Set the top of the paver about an inch below the mowing height of the turf (set mower to highest setting - everybody mows too short). This will help to minimize ponding on the surface of the pavers and allow for some thatch accumulation. After pavers are set, scoop some of the sand from around the pavers to slope the sand away from the paver edges. Fill this area with topsoil and seed. This should give you enough information to figure out a budget.

We also planted rosemary and mondo grass as ground cover to the space between the patio, the corner of the house, and the back wall that borders this portion of the yard. We then landscaped the front of the home with a continuing symmetry reminiscent of French country garden design. We wanted to establish a sense of grand entrance to the home, so we built a stone walkway that ran all the way from the sidewalk and then fanned out parallel to the covered porch that centers on the front door and large front windows of the house.

May 11, 2025 - This narrow side yard features a pathway of flagstone in a gentle curve. The winding path adds movement and feels natural in organic landscapes. (via Marilyn’s Dreamscapes) ‘Tiny Tower’ Italian cypress evergreens (hardy to USDA Zone 7) provide a rhythmic structure to the flowing bluestone entry walk that terminates in a fountain courtyard. The walkway’s stone is full-range Connecticut bluestone (a sandstone with excellent slip resistance) in a random pattern with an irregular (natural) edge; the brick is McNear Common Red.
