SIG is a great firm, but they even straight up admit that the upside is low. They get you with a 3 year noncompete and they will straight up tell you as you get the offer that they consider this a trade-off; you get a SIG "education" in return of 1 year assistant + 3 year trading "low" bonuses (admittedly all-in comp for their assistant positions is respectable due to the high base.)

SIG is $100/ hr and $27.5k signing bonus : r/csMajors
October 5, 2022 - SIG isn't. $31.25/hour plus a $27.5k signing bonus wouldn't make much sense. ... I think the above salary is for trading.

Compensation for the types of quants
I'm a quant headhunter. I place quant researchers/traders, quant developers, and PMs into buy-side firms (prop & hedge). I'm going to echo what u/peepspeepstoottoot said around higher risk / higher reward based on how close you are to alpha & monetization. In my experience, there are certain firms that are known for paying way above their competitors, and sometimes just to stop other firms from hiring the talent. Some of these firms include Citadel (Securities & GQS), Millennium, Jump Trading & Tower Research Additionally, each firm has a slightly different way of paying their talent; which also varies on seniority. Examples below: Deferral scheme. Where your bonus is split and paid across multiple years (20% year 1, 30% year 2, and 50% year 3) 100% cash. Paid in one lump (usually in Feb/March). Occasionally firms have a payback clause, where if you have to repay the money if you leave within 3/6 months of receiving the bonus Internal funds. Some hedge funds allow employees to invest a certain amount into internal funds, which can give you returns ranging from 40-100%. This has great tax benefits PnL (%) cut. Used specifically for PMs & senior hires in pod set-ups. Prop firms usually pay between 30-60%. Sliding scale dependent on Sharpe ratio Hedge funds usually pay a fixed % (~20-30%). Please note it's also possible to join an existing pod and to negotiate some PnL cut in the way in. For example, you could join a pod where the infrastructure etc is already established, and the PM could agree to pay you ~20% of anything you generate. From my experience of placing quants. Below are the comp ranges I've seen: Quant Researcher/Trader: $400k - $5M Quant PM: $1M - $20M. I am aware of PMs getting paid +$50M in the most successful teams Quant Developers: $300k - 1M Over the past few years, comps have increased substantially due to the increased market volatility. I've spoken to hiring managers who've hired top graduates for guarantees in excess of $500k for the 1st year. More on reddit.com

The dough is good after you get in the door. I knew a guy from the macro team when I lived in philly and he had a considerable amount of his own capital in a prop pool (the way he described it to me was the firms money aka his stake with the firm) he was short the major indices before December 31st 2018 and cleaned up a nice trade for his team. I think he said he was doing 1/2 a stick a year. He was like 30.
I think it also matters what desk you work on: ETF, equities, fixed income, options/commodities etc.

To give some context, a trading role mostly involves making markets (posting buy prices and sell prices) for customers (such as those of you on Robinhood!) on different securities (options, stocks, ETFs, etc.). Basically, a trader provides liquidity to the market exchanges. For the first five weeks of the internship, I was placed on the index vol desk during the morning, and we rotated to afternoon desk in the second half of the internship.
